On before them we have The Fancy Dress Party. To honour them, I'm coming dressed as myself circa February 2010. Which incidentally is the same as myself circa 2005. I need new clothes.

To warm you up we have The Magic Lantern. They'll be lighting up the Wilmington Stage. I'm all out of cheesy puns about them now.

1.30pm - 4pm

The 2010 Musical Comedy Awards saw 40 of the hottest UK Musical Comedy acts performing in 7 completely sold out shows at the Wilmington Arms and a Time Out Critics Choice and Guardian Pick of the Week Grand Final at the gorgeous New Players Theatre!

You can read a review of the final here: http://www.spoonfed.co.uk/spooners/evolmike-871/musical-comedy-awards-2010-2511/

With this year's competition over, we want to give you the chance to see extended sets of the brilliant artists who took part this year! The Wilmington Arms is just about the coolest pub in the world. To get an idea of the amazing atmosphere, watch this clip of the Quarter-Finals: http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=341164316260

The first of several showcases will feature the following artists:

HEADLINED BY JAY FOREMAN:

Jay is one of the hottest properties on the musical comedy circuit in 2010. He came third in this year's Awards, though many judges felt he should have won it. Come and watch him perform an extended set.

'Arguably the most musically gifted songwriter among us tonight' - SPOONFED

'Likeable presence, elegant performance and an effective collection of gags....one of the most musically talented finalists' - CHORTLE

'Jay Foreman is a talent to watch. For me, he was head and shoulders better than anyone else in the final' - EARL OKIN

KEVIN DAVIDSON + FRIENDS

Kevin hasn't been involved in musical comedy for long, but that didn't stop him from storming to the Semi-Finals of the Awards with his smooth, sexy and ridiculous songs. Come and listen to his apple juice song...genius! He will also be joined by the Commie Faggots and Mooga Frese testing out new material.

BEN GLASSTONE

Multi-talented musician, composer and comedian with a style reminiscent of the great Tom Lehrer: http://www.musicalcomedy.co.uk/video/300/love-and-specs

His reviews speak for themselves:

'Glasstone mixes wildly disparate styles from Klezmer to Renaissance Madrigal and his lyrics are inspired' - NEW YORK TIMES

'Ben Glasstone's delightful songs' - TIME OUT

HANNAH BRACKENBURY

Very talented singer-songwriter based in Brighton who reached the Quarter-Finals of this year's Awards with her finely-crafted, hilarious songs. A real treat! Check out one of her brilliant songs here: http://www.musicalcomedy.co.uk/video/291/The-L-Word--Hannah-Brackenbury

SOOZ KEMPNER

This year's Best Newcomer at the Musical Comedy Awards! Having only played 3 gigs before entering the Awards, Sooz Kempner is definitely one to watch! http://www.musicalcomedy.co.uk/video/314/Sooz-Kempners-parody-of-Beautiful-Christina-Aguilera

'Quirky style and a knockout voice' - CHORTLE

THE MONKEYBALL EXPERIMENT Saturday 24th April 2010

THE BITTER SPRINGS + VIC GODARD + THE LONG DECLINE

8.00pm. £8/ £6 advance from www.wegottickets.com

"Proclaimed as 'One of the best kept secrets in the annals of Brit garage-rock' by UNCUT mag, The Bitter Springs have released 4 critically acclaimed albums and a slew of 7inchers and EPs since forming in 1996. Their 3rd album, "Benny Hill's Wardrobe" was Mojo mag's Album of the Month. Impossible to categorise because of their constant genre-hopping, the Bitter Springs have in front man Simon Rivers an especially witty, sharply socially conscious and erudite lyricist. They are a defiantly unique act.

For a couple of years around 2003, The Bitter Springs became Subway Sect, backing band of the legendary Vic Godard. For one night only Vic Godard will be rejoining the Bitter Springs for a Subway Sect set, in addition to the Springs playing their own set !

It's gonna be pretty special !"

ROUT OF THE BLUES Wednesday 28th April 2010

The Owl Service

7.30pm till 11pm. £5 entry on door

Rout of the Blues - a brand new evening of old and new sounds bound loosely under the umbrella term ‘folk music’.

Rout of the Blues - though evoking the spirit of legendary sixties nights at UFO & Middle Earth & the ambience of cosy folk dens – is not a psychedelic, experimental, revivalist or traditional folk night. It’s none of those things and all of those things!

Rout of the Blues is a night for those that know close to nothing about folk, but are not averse to the sound of a Morris band, a fiddle and penny whistle or at the very least early Marc Bolan.

Presented by The Fox and The Blacksmith, your non-specialist hosts, Rout of the Blues expresses a deep enthusiasm for folk influenced sounds from the early sixties through to the present, where The Albion Band & Fairport rub shoulders with The Byrds or even Hawkwind.

The Fox, a South East / North Western dandy hybrid with a first class honours degree in progressive rock will promote the majesty of Caravan, Family and Heron with a keen ear to newer folk acts such as Tunng and The Memory Band.

The Blacksmith, a Northumbrian of rustic earthy charm celebrates rugged traditionalism with a fondness for Steeleye Span and Shirley Collins yet delights to contemporary musings by Midlake, the Unthanks & Johnny Flynn.

Somewhere in the middle your two hosts will lock horns; joust, jig and reel to folk music ancient and modern.  Rout of the Blues – a future folk tradition!
