CLUB AC30 PRESENTS Thursday 3rd February 2011

The Domino State

Daniel Land & The Modern Painters

+ Club AC30 DJs

£5 on the door

Doors at 8pm

The Domino State make “brooding, intense music that knocks spots off much
of the competition” (The Independent). On August 16th, they released their
hotly anticipated debut album Uneasy Lies the Crown, recorded late
2009/early 2010 at Treacle Studios, East London and produced by Joe Adams
(Radio Academy award winner 2010 - best live music producer).

Uneasy Lies the Crown was officially launched by the band on August 13th
with a special free in-store show at Rough Trade East, who were
exclusively stocking advance copies of the album.

The album release comes after numerous prestigious support slots including
the O2 Arena with Coldplay and tours with M83 and Longview, as well as
festival appearances including Glastonbury and Summer Sundae Weekender.

The band’s previous single “Firefly” was released last summer and picked
up instantly by iTunes and placed on their “what’s hot” compilation
featuring their pick of the latest UK releases. It was also that week’s
“hottest download” in The Sunday Times.

They have received worldwide airplay, including the UK (BBC, XFM , NME
Radio, Kerrang Radio, BFBS Radio), Germany (Motor FM, Radio Fritz, NDR
Radio), USA (Britsound Radio), Italy (Radio Città Aperta), Peru (Kool Rock
Radio), and have been Steve Lamacq's BBC6 rebel playlist winners.

Now in its third year, the Musical Comedy Awards (MCA) are back for another celebration of the UK’s best emerging and established musical comedians!

After the total sell out success of last year’s MCA, WeGotTickets have this year partnered up with Avin a Larf to sponsor the Best Newcomer Category in this prestigious competition to discover, support and promote the best emerging talent in the UK’s growing musical comedy community.

With some of the biggest names in comedy, acts such as Bill Bailey and Tim Minchin, popularising the genre, the MCA have grown in stature to become a key date in the comedy calendar and a launch pad for many careers.

FIKA RECORDINGS PRESENT Saturday 12th February 2011

Fika Recordings presents:

Horowitz (UK)

Moustache Of Insanity (UK)

Lisa Bouvier (SE)

Lost Summer Kitten (SE)

This night sees the launch of Fika Recordings, an anglo-swedish indiepop cassette label, presenting four artists releasing EPs with us tonight. There'll be free cakes baked by us to recipes from each of the bands.

Tickets £5 adv from http://www.wegottickets.com/event/103538

(£4 unwaged on the door, else £6). Doors at 8, music starts 8:30pm. Indiepop disco after.

Further details  at http://fikarecordings.wordpress.com

Moustache Of Insanity

Moustache Of Insanity are Nik (keyboards and giggles) and Bill (guitar and moustache). We first came across them supporting one of Bill’s various other bands (probably Allo Darlin’ or with Darren Hayman’s Secondary Modern) and were immediately blown away with their infectious and outrageously fun take on indiepop. Fiendishly simple songs about sending postcards to strangers over the internet, books and the soon-to-be swedish punk classic Kaktus is all it takes to take us to a place with no worries, a world where we can just spend all our time with friends dancing and singing along to pop. We love them.
“Goofy conceptualists” (New York Times)
“A daft combination of twee bedroom pop and the Moldy Peaches” (indie-mp3)
“It’s like The Ramones writing Belle & Sebastian records. Initially these tracks sound a little throwaway, but a repeat listen reveals a truly heartfelt, almost melancholic feel in these genuine love songs” (Off The Beaten Tracks)

Horowitz

Described as “the sound of the indiepop underground,” Horowitz formed in 2004 as a three-piece bedroom project. Since then they have released a full-length LP, 5 singles and numerous compilation tracks, memorably coining the slogan ‘Popkids of the World Unite!’ on the b-side of their first single for Cloudberry Records, 2007’s ‘Tracyanne.’ Practically bleeding DIY ethics, the band have taken their Pavement-meets-Subway Organization brand of noise pop to Germany, Sweden and the U.S, playing some of the finest indiepop clubs and festivals including Cosy Den in Stockholm and the 2010 NYC Popfest.
They’ve also released singles with WeePop, Paper Tiger and Glo-Fi.
“Horowitz songs are like something you can cling to when times are hard, or you’ve had a shit day at work, or you have no money or your girlfriend’s just told you she’s running off with your sister” (A Layer of Chips) .
“For other bands, Horowitz make lesson one quite simple. Have tunes. Loads of them” (In Love With These Times in Spite of These Times).
“Horowitz totally do guitar-based indie pop (like, TOTALLY do it) that makes me feel like there’s some whole other worry-free world out there that” (Norman Records).

Lisa Bouvier

Lisa Bouvier took the brave leap into the pop world 2007, having grown tired of compromises in various band formations. She quickly made a name in southern Sweden as its most frisky popstar with handclaps, vocal harmonies and a bloodied guitar that could get any pop club or living room dancing along to her catchy songs.
In Lisa’s music the melodies form the center. Melodies that sticks like flypaper and are backed by equally deliberate handclaps, naive pop that push rock riffs and occasionally a beautiful singer / songwriter calm.
With these ingredients Lisa Bouvier suceeds with the true art of being an unpretentious serious pop artist. The lyrics dealing with small bittersweet truths about life, spiced with all manner of popular cultural references in the style of Annika Norlin and Mary LouLord. Behind her, Lisa Bouvier has Skåne, Sweden’s finest musicians, The Pop Messengers, composed of Emmy Hogstrom-Tagesson (vocals, melodica), Lars Diurlin (drums, vocals), Mattias Lidehäll (bass), Håkan Carlsson (git / keyboard / dance) and André Brorsson (piano, dance). Together they also play in Stars In Coma. Following magnificent sets with her band across the pop clubs of Europe, she’ll be playing a flurry of solo gigs in the UK in the new year.
“The scrumptious indiepop of Lisa Bouvier…. is this the best indiepop you’ve heard all year?” Swedesplease.net

Lost Summer Kitten

I first came across Lost Summer Kitten sometime in 2006, having stumbled upon their song Love Song No. 1 and instantly adored it’s melancholic bittersweetness. It quickly became a staple of mixtapes made for friends and I couldn’t resist playing it on the radio in Nottingham and Vancouver time and time again, much to the chagrin of fellow presenters who asked whether it was really necessary to play the same song so frequently (answer: yes, it was).
Fast forward 4 years to a cold February evening in 2010 and I’m meeting a few Swedes in the pub in Camden before heading over to the opening night of London Popfest. At that point, I barely knew them, having met only once before at a Twee As Fuck night a few months earlier. Conversation turned to the songs we’d put on mix CDs for the mix exchange at the popfest alldayer, and, old habits being hard to break, Lost Summer Kitten was on the CD I’d painstakingly put together. Turns out I was drinking “jugs of whatever” ale with LSK, who promptly reformed on the 242 bus back into the city after a few more beers to serenade the passengers with their sublime three-way harmonies of love, loss and loneliness. They’ve never been far from my heart since.
Lost Summer Kitten are Matilda Hjärtstam, Lisa Westerlund, Dennis Hollström and Amanda Nordin.

BRIGHT CLUB: REVOLUTION 2 Tuesday 15th February 2011

This month we bump the boffins for a line-up full of other members of the Bright Club family: People who are usually in the audience, door staff and curators.

Hosted by the lovely David Morgan (remember him from the New York Time review of our December gig?) with Jo Stephenson on uke and funny songs.

The revolutionaries are:

Charlie Pyne - you've seen her as Strawberry and taking your money. What's she like in real life?

Steve Hewitt - you've seen him teaching and drinking beer, but can he explain what he's drinking?

Jane Gregory - can see into your mind. Because she's a psychologist.

Alex Sarll - would like you to mind your Ps and Qs. Is sub-editing humour even possible?

Rebecca Machin - who makes films, and is from Stoke. And has been invited to Bright Club on dates.

Rick Crawford - is one half of he team behind Bright Club Manchester taking a trip to the Southern metropolis.

DEATH AND GLORY Thursday 17th February 2011

Hello again. Are you sitting comfortably? Sure? You don't want to take
those shoes off? OK. Well, we're back again with D&G 7 and this one is a
peach (aren't they all?). We normally have a theme for our nights but the
theme this month just seems to be creating a nightmare for our long
suffering sound engineer! We'll have more instruments on stage than you
can shake a drum stick at so without further ado I give you...

GILBERT (www....myspace.com/gilbertlinley)
Shifty Disco uber-nutters Gilbert return for their second Ravenous show
and if you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing them live before you need to
get some. Matthew ‘Gilbert’ Linley is the non-evil mastermind responsible
and he is a classically trained musician who has written scores for film
and TV. He is also a drummer. Not your every day mix and Gilbert are not
an everyday band. Comparisons are futile and likenesses cannot be drawn
but if you like motivational speaking over big beats and live trumpets
then you might just love Gilbert. You might also need some medication...

THE B OF THE BANG (www.thebofthebang.co.uk)
Back for a second dose of D&G, Southsea’s finest TBOTB are firm favourites
in the world of Ravenous. Their blend of filmic, folk-tinged electronic
music with a wry sense of humour and a slightly deranged look at the world
makes them addictive and infectious – like all the best diseases. Think
the darker moments of Blur, Belle & Sebastian at their most whimsical and
Beck at his funkiest and you’ll get some idea of the talent these guys
have. Plus they have some of the best hair going so even if you don’t like
the music you can admire the locks!

SALMON JACK (www.facebook.com/salmonjackmusic)
Comedy Hip-Hop. Wait, come back....I know it sounds a bit dodgy but then
they used to say white men couldn’t jump and rock’n’roll would never take
off. Sam Baron and Jack Miller (see what they’ve done there?) are two of
the guys behind this collective and their mix of clever lyrics, witty
observations and addictive grooves is gaining them a lot of fans already.
Add in their own projections and films as part of the performance and
these guys are a truly unique package. So open your minds and your ears
and strap on your dancing clogs.

ONE MAN TEAM DANCE (www.myspace.com/onemanteamdance)
Where do you start with OMTD? Toys R Us might be a good choice. You see,
this High Wycombe duo make an almighty and infectious racket using toy
instruments, a couple of synths and a drumkit. Oh and sweat bands. Their
new album will be out on Dead Pilot Records soon and these guys promise to
be either huge or a hilarious flash in the pan at the expense of East
London trendyists! The reality is they are just mental. The music is
mental. You’d be mental to miss them so get there early!

WHICH WAY IS UP! Friday 18th February 2011

Which Way Is Up!  A New Night from Odd Box Records

This Many Boyfriends
The Give It Ups
Lisa Bouvier

Doors 8pm. £5

 This Many Boyfriends
http://www.myspace.com/howmanyboyfriends

This Leeds quintet are signed to Sheffield indiepop hit factory Thee SPC. Their song ‘I Don't Like You ('Cos You Don't Like The Pastels)’ has been an indiepop disco floor filler since it came out last year. Their live shows are often shambolic (and incredibly fun) where their top notch pop songs shine through. If you love Hefner, The Smiths or a good time, you’ll love This Many Boyfriends.

''This Many Boyfriends make raucous, shambolic indiepop that makes you bop around like it's 1986'' - PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER, 2010

 The Give It Ups
http://www.myspace.com/theegiveitups

Odd Box favourites return to play another set of addictive lo-fi indiepop. They're going to be part of the Odd Box Singles Club so come along and hear what all the fuzz is about. Like all the best bits of all the best bands packaged up as a shambling pop dream with hooks so large you can hang duffle coats on them! Everyone should love The Give It Ups. And they do:

"Cheery pop manoeuvres" - Kitten Painting

"Beat Happening having a fight with Huggy Bear in Mothercare" - Spiral Scratch

"The twee Pavement" - Ian from Horowitz

Lisa Bouvier  (from Stars In Coma)
http://www.myspace.com/lisaiwannateaseya

Lisa is promising a stripped back electric performance. She recently relocated to London from her native Sweden. With an imminent release on the newly established Fika Recordings (A DIY cassette label) – Lisa is due to capture indiepop hearts with her infectious melodies - you should expect sparkly pop songs to warm your hearts in the chill of mid winter.

★ Guest DJ - Paul Richards - Scared To Dance

Ferocity Lights are a mixture of influences with the result being music that we want to hear. Very much a rock band but trying not to stick to one particular sound. Trying not to get pigeonholed? More not wanted to get stale.
http://www.myspace.com/ferocitylights

Conceived as a sort of situationist prank by a group of Norfolk (UK) based misfits Scumbag Philosopher are a nihilist-baiting mismatch of a crazed girl mauling her two drum kit. a grumbling, misanthropic, borderline aspergers front man and cascading, caterwauling guitars.

Walking Naked Mary: Lots of electronic synthie sounds but still rocking in a postmodern way. Lot’s of raw punk rock n roll with a touch of pop. From Hamburg!

2011 MUSICAL COMEDY AWARDS - SEMI FINAL Saturday 5th March 2011

10 acts + JAMES SHERWOOD - "If you ever wondered what would happen if Bill Bailey and Marcus Brigstocke had a child..." CHORTLE

1.30pm

Tickets at £7 and available from our sponsor WeGotTickets at www.wegotcomedy.com.

Having been selected by a panel of industry judges from the website www.musicalcomedy.co.uk, the UK’s top 40 emerging musical comedy acts will compete in a series of heats between January and March at the Wilmington Arms, with each show headlined by established stars of the circuit. From each heat of ten acts, the audience and judges will vote for their favourite five acts to progress to the next stage. The Final of the MCA will then take place on March 19th at the New Players Theatre, Embankment.

All of the MCA shows will be hosted by the 2010 MCA Runners Up, the brilliant HORSE & LOUIS - “See them before they're big, otherwise you'll regret it.” - BRITISH COMEDY GUIDE

Line-ups subject to change: for latest info check www.musicalcomedy.co.uk

Zoe Self - racehorse scientist
Ryan Nichol - physicist
Tom Manly- psychologist
Dom Furniss - Interaction Researcher

Doors 8pm

What a line-up of brainboxes, intellectual heavyweights and big
thinkers we have for you this month at the clever comedy night that
this month made the front page of the BBC website!

Joe Lycett takes MCing duties for his Bright Club debut. He was best
newcomer at the 2010 Chortle Awards, so it'll be interesting to see
what he's been up to since then.

Strawberry & Cream return to their spiritual home, showcasing their
own songs alongside the usual array of sexy covers.
...
Zoe Self studies how race-horses work. They're pretty big and that's a
lot of muscle, bone and tendon to track. She won't be giving out tips
for the 4.15 at Chepstow.

Jon Butterworth smashes particles into one another using a little
piece of apparatus called the Large Hadron Collider. You might have
heard of it.

Dom Furniss is a human-computer interactions specialist, and he
tackles the really big questions like "Why don't things just
work?!?!?!"

Ryan Nicholl flies balloons in the antarctic looking for neutrinos. He
also has more magnets in his office than anyone I've met in my life.

Tom Manly is a neuroscientist. He'll popping open a few skulls to see
what's going on inside.

DEATH & GLORY ST PATRICKS DAY SPECIAL Thursday 17th March 2011

When we read that we had the honour of doing the St Patrick's day show at
the Wilmo we were dead chuffed. Then we realised that we didn't know any
good Irish bands. So, we've gone for entirely non-Irish bands of supreme
quality and free whisky on the door until the bottle runs out. In the
words of Sean Connery, it's a compromyje...

AMBASSADORS OF MOROCCO (www.myspace.com/ambassadorsofm...orocco)
Formed in an abandoned shoe factory (Ambassadors of Morocco is Victorian
slang for a shoemaker), this London based quartet have had quite a ride
since their launch in autumn 2010. A savvy blend of early Blur, the Cure
and Depeche Mode has created a sound heavy of melody and big of hook. With
6Music and XFM already on board and songs like the oh-so-topical Wikipedia
being hailed as modern classics, AoM look set to be one of the feel-good
hits of this summer.

VETS IN HONG KONG (www.myspace.com/vetsinhongkong)
Vets in Hong Kong are a new school band with old school sensibilities.
They put on their own nights, produce a zine (no blogs here) and play
quality songs crafted in the style of Arcade Fire, Death From Above,
Vampire Weekend and Mars Volta. Following the release of their debut E.P.
in February 2011, ViHK are picking up momentum despite their early stages.
And if all else fails, they can easily go and treat sick pigs in the old
colony....

MODEL STAGGS (www.myspace.com/modelstaggs)
Electro Folk Garage. No, not somewhere that robots go to get repaired but
instead is Cambridge's finest, Model Staggs. Confusingly, they aren't
Stags either but rather the dynamic duo of Ash and Tom playing fierce
guitar and drum driven tunes with the raw energy of the White Stripes and
the foppish charm of Mumford & Sons. So, confusing descriptions aside, it
all sounds marvellous. What a relief?!

KATE STAPLEY (www.myspace.com/katestapley)
North London lass Kate Stapley is a rising star of the UK folk scene with
an edginess and charm not to be underestimated. Influenced by the likes of
Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, Fionn Regan, Joni Mitchell and Laura Marling,
Stapley is in fine company and we expect you'll be swooning in to your
free whisky in no time...

As always, doors are at 8.00pm, entry is £4 and first act on at 8.15.....ish

DEATH & GLORY ST PATRICKS DAY SPECIAL

WHICH WAY IS UP! Friday 18th March 2011

★ Which Way Is Up! #2 ★

A new night from Odd Box. Every third Friday of the month at The Wilmington Arms.

★ The Felt Tips ★
http://thefelttips.com/

Pop music is all about pop crushes. And The Felt Tips first grabbed my heart back at the first ever indietracks (2007, folks!). Since then the band have found a drummer and written one of the LPs of 2010 - 'Living and Growing'. This quartet from Glasgow are playing a rare London show! Be sure to see them and prepare to have your own pop crush on The Felt Tips.

The Felt Tips play melodic indiepop songs about your life – like that time you fumbled around with a condom in your darkened bedroom while trying to keep the mood alive – well The Felt Tips were there watching you.

★ Pocketbooks ★
http://www.pocketbooks.org.uk/

London's premier indiepop band are playing Odd Box for the first time (although they were big favourites at my old Lost Music nights!). The band have been 'away' recording their second album. Their first 'Flight Plaths' was a highlight of 2009 and was released on the How Does It Feel To Be Loved? label. Pocketbooks deliver shimmering pop music which comes informed by 60s soul and the best that indiepop has to offer.

"Some of the finest songwriters in indiepop today" - SCATTERBRAIN

"Remember those albums you listen to when you're laid on the floor of your bedroom and you've just done something completely life-changing? Or you're just about to? Well, this is one of those. Listen to Flight Paths, and go out and find the one you love." - A LAYER OF CHIPS

★ Falling and Laughing ★
www.myspace.com/duncsfallingandlaughing

Falling and Laughing are two piece indiepop band from Birmingham, UK. They released their beautiful hand crafted 'Bunny Hood' EP on Odd Box in 2010 (very few copies left folks!). And I am delighted to finally be able to bring the band down to London to play a pop show for us!

"There is something quintessentially British about the lyrical content on offer here, taking in subjects such as NME writers, bus routes and geeky girls turned supercool, while the tempo changes in all four songs ensure the ears are constantly stimulated." - THE WESTMORLAND GAZETTE

WILL PICKVANCE AND FRIENDS

WHICH WAY IS UP! Friday 15th April 2011

A new night from Odd Box. Every third Friday of the month at The Wilmington Arms.

Baaneex

http://baaneex.com/

Baaneex are the latest signings to Odd Box Records. The band hail from Hackney in East London. They were tipped as 'ones to watch in 2011' by Sounds XP. Describing themselves as “Dracula-inspired garage punk/noisepop/roarcore”.

"Their sound is somewhat wide-spanning and incredibly difficult to pin down. Weird Dance 2 is two songs, or two bands even, in one.... It’s chaotic and confusing, but exciting, fun and even manages to be catchy. I’m pretty sure I don’t understand it, and God knows where they’re planning to go with it, but regardless, this is great. Just give it a bloody listen. " - Basement Forever

The Notes

http://www.myspace.com/wearethenotes

The Notes are Sam, Lauren, Aaron and their vintage drum machine.

They make music for your heart and ears. Their debut album has recently surfaced as a beautiful double 10" on Bleeding Gold Records. Their reverb soaked indiepop has been at the top of our playlists. I can not wait to see them in action!

Chips For The Poor

Chips For The Poor will startle you. In a good way. Like a mind bending mix of The Fall and a drunk kickboxer. They're everything that is great about pop music in 2011. This will be their first UK show after returning from SXSW in Austin, TX.

''The vibe is lo-fi electronic punk that nods to Suicide, The Fall and The Talking Heads but carries a humour more present in modern new wavers such as simian mobile disco. This is a seven inch that will turn a few heads' - Rough Trade

'It's a banger' - Huw Stephens, Radio 1

WHICH WAY IS UP! Monday 18th April 2011

★ Which Way Is Up! ★ has a Monday night special coming up.

A Monday?

Yep we couldn't make the Friday work and Odd Box couldn't resist the chance to put on the fabulous Onward Chariots who are over on their European tour - so we are doing a Monday night special!

So yeah. Excited.

Doors: 8pm

★ Onward Chariots ★ (NYC, USA)

http://www.myspace.com/onwardchariots

People have compared Onward Chariots' music to the Beach Boys, Beulah, the Shins, Teenage Fanclub, and Belle and Sebastian, among others. Their summer tinged flower power pop is the missing link between 60s pop and 80s indiepop. The band were one of the highlights of Indietracks in 2010 and I'm dead excited that they're coming back to London to play their pop songs.

"I think I have found a new favourite band, a band that has such an effect on me that I want to listen to their songs over and over again and I still want more" -- Eardrums

★ The Sunny Street ★

http://thesunnystreet.tumblr.com/

Just announced for the NYC popfest, Anglo/French quartet The Sunny Street are a lo-fi pop treasure that joins the dots between the dreamy hazy pop of Mazzy Star and the indiepop of Brighter and a host of other Sarah favourites. The Sunny Street have been quietly kicking up a fuss over the past few years with appearances at the Indietracks festival, the legendary Nottingham Indiepop all dayer, a tour of Sweden and the awesome Let's kiss and make up Indie Pop Days weekender in Berlin. Their new album, "Hidden For Decades" is coming out soon on Plastilina records, too.

★ Owl + Mouse ★

http://www.myspace.com/sonicuke

Owl + Mouse hail from London and they have played for HDIF and had Ian (from HDIF) enthused about their mesmerising set so much so that I had to book them. Their sound is a delicate and gentle folky take on indiepop which manages to sound a little like Allo Darlin’, with a dash of The Magnetic Fields (check out their cover of 'The Book of Love' on their My Space!) and hints of Camera Obscura at their most vulnerable. Lovely.

Tickets: £5 - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/112891

DEATH AND GLORY Thursday 21st April 2011

Here comes our Easter Special and it's ruddy eggcellent. From the outset
we need to point out that this is the night before Good Friday so you can
drink, dance, drink some more and then sleep all through the next day
before waking up to eat the brown treats the Easter Bunny has left for
you. The chocolate, not the shit (lawsuit avoided). But before all that
happens we're giving you a very special night of live music which
goes......a little....something....like.....this!

MFC Chicken (www.myspace.com/mfcchicken)
They're back! MFC Chicken absolutely blew our minds in December at the
Christmas show so we got them back just as soon as we could. For those of
you who are uninitiated in the ways of the Chicken then just know that the
MFC boys play rock'n'roll the good old fashioned way. Raw bass, smooth
organ, driving drums, wailing guitar, booming sax, sing-a-long lyrics and
a whole lot of sweat. And if that doesn't convince you then let it be
known that MFC Chicken are the first band we've given an hour long set to
- yes, they're just that good.

Bourbon Army (www.myspace.com/bourbonarmy)
We first discovered these guys supporting We Rock Like Girls Don't and
they blew us away. A rockin' two piece from Venezuela that have more balls
than the lottery show and bigger chops than an oversized butchers. Bourbon
Army are a band that are way more than the sum of their parts and the
parts are pretty damn impressive....if you know what I mean.

The Clench (www.myspace.com/itstheclench)
Sheffield gun slingers The Clench are 6 horseman of the A-rock-olypse and
they are riding in to London town for the first time to steal your horse
and get with your woman. They play Country with a hard edge, music you can
light a match on if you will. Think of the music Clint would have an his
i-pod while he rode across the prairy - if any of that was remotely
historically possible. We can but dream...

As usual it's all kicking off at 8ish and it'll cost you nothing more than
£4.

COLOUR ME POP Friday 13th May 2011

WOULD-BE-GOODS

Ah, the Would-Be-Goods, Matinee Records' elegant and melancholy pop legends. You have Jessica Griffin's beautiful and distinctly English vocals, Peter Momtchiloff's crisp and colourful guitar, Andy Warren's confident bass lines and then there is the happiest drummer in pop: Debbie Green. No drummer is able to pay such varied and strong rhythms, sing such clear harmonies and carry such a sunny smile as Debbie. The combination of these four distinctive personalities and talents makes for one of my favourite pop bands around. Jessica has been writing, playing and singing fantastic songs like 'The Camera Loves Me' since the late 80s and the band continue to write complex and beautiful compositions. They played HDIF in Brixton in January and debuted a fresh tune! This band are one of indiepop's and the UK's quietly legendary gems. Do not miss this!

http://www.would-be-goods.com

THE STARLETS

Somehow this accomplished Scottish band have been around for over ten years but I only just heard of them and witnessed their brilliant live performance this past December at the Glasgow Popfest. The band have a huge sound accented by violin and trumpet, the latter ably played by Nigel of Camera Obscura. What completely won me over though was the charming between-song Glaswegian storytelling from Biff, the band's vocalist, acoustic guitarist and frontperson. The audience was in stitches at Biff's stories and consequently, each song soared. We were theirs. Have a look at this video below to catch a glimpse of what we saw and you will see when The Starlets play for us on this night. The band are on their way to Paris the following day, so come and say 'bon voyage!' to them this Friday night.

CINEPLEXX

Sebastian Litmanovich is an incredibly witty, sweet and tender, outgoing and FUN personality, songwriter and performer. You watch him and you feel as if you are on holiday. Stressed? Tired of the dreary weather? Week too long? Then you want a dose of Cineplexx. He has been creating his sometimes upbeat, sometimes downbeat richly textured songs for many years abroad. We are lucky to now have him sprinkling his Spanish-language tunes upon us in London. Come welcome this fabulous recent London transplant to the city!

BRIGHT CLUB Tuesday 17th May 2011

This month Bright Club is two years old. Can you believe it? In that time we've run more than twenty-five gigs, hosted more than a hundred speakers, enjoyed the company of more than 3000 audience members, grown into two new cities and had more than five hundred rounds of applause.

So we're celebrating in style, by inviting some old friends to share sets old and new, and to keep us up to date with the latest humorous happenings in their fields.

Steve Hall is back as MC after holding our last Bloomsbury Theatre sellout together. He knows Bright Club inside-out, and will probably be wearing his glasses to try and look scholarly.

Colin Hazel will be tinkling our ivories as only he can tinkle. Smooth.

You might have heard Jason Dittmer on a recent podcast. He works on Captain America and the apocalypse, on the antichrist and Alan Moore. He's a human geographer (so no colouring in).

Laura Ishiguro reads other people's letters. She's studying correspondence between frontiersmen (and women) and their families back home. She's a great source of vintage culinary, etiquette and dating advice!

Joe Flatman examines ships for violent and sexual iconography and checks for exciting objects before anyone builds in Surrey. He's an archaeologist, but of the cool metropolitan variety, rather than a beardy Time Teamer. Ask him about Bone Kickers. Please ask him about Bone Kickers.

We're waiting to hear back from two more geniuses. It's going to be a PACKED evening.

As a special treat we have an anniversary appearance from Steve Cross, the voice on the Bright Club podcasts. He'll be telling you all the stupid things that happen when you run a comedy club that people who've never been don't understand for two years.

Wilmington Arms. Five pounds to get in. Doors at 8pm. May 17th. What more do you need to know?

DEATH AND GLORY Thursday 19th May 2011

At Death & Glory we like to think we give you plenty in terms of entertainment, new music and fun times. Well, now we want to give a little more back to the world by supporting the Stay Strong Stephen Murray campaign. Ravenous Promotions lady Merryn's other half is cycling the entire length of the country and needs sponsorshing (see more at http://www.ltdstate.com/lejog) so we are helping out with this gig. However, we aren't letting u...p on the quality music front so this month we are giving you.....

MR TWIST (http://www.facebook.com/mrtwistband)

Fresh from the launch of their debut album 'D.I.Y.' (Smashed Records), London Indie-rockers Mr Twist are coming back from their second Ravenous show. Those of you that saw their Ginglik show for us a few years ago will be intrigued to know that the band have developed a harder edge (think QOTSA, Foos, Biffy) to compliment their pure 3-part vocal harmonies and hook laden tunes. Mr Twist are a band developing in to serious contenders and with album number 2 already being recorded there is lots to look forward to!

PEERLESS PIRATES (http://www.peerlesspirates.com)

After a while out in the wilderness (or open seas if we're gonna get nautical), Peerless Pirates have come in to dock to drink with your woman and drink your rum. Captained by Cliff Adams, this Oxford 4-piece mix the janglier elements of the Smiths with the raw energy of the Stooges and layer on some intricate lyrics for good measure. There are some of their old favourites in the set but, more excitingly, there are a few new tracks in the pipeline which promise to be belters.

COP ON THE EDGE http://www.facebook.com/copontheedge)

New Cross Indie-Popsters Cop On the Edge create a pic'n'mix blend of music that will keep you guessing from one song to another. Guitars, synth, percussion and a cracking rhythm section work their way through styles from Pere Ubu to Talking Heads and then off to Joy Division for a quick visit without having around long enought to get too grumpy. New single 'Honorary Girl' has just come out with the debut album 'Single Science' soon to follow but it's in the live arena that COTE excel so come and check them out for yourself.

CHRIS ALIANO (http://www.myspace.com/chrisaliano)

Way back in the mists of time, when Stages Of Dan were just a glint in a horny old rockers eye, there was a young man called Chris Aliano. His Dylan-esque folky ramblings won him many a fan and groupie before he went down the rock'n'roll road. Well, it took some persuading but as Chris is a big supporter of the Stay Strong Stephen Murray charity, he couldn't resist but get involved. So get down early for a rare performance by this talented singer-songwriter. And Cheesemonger.

As always, doors at 8.00pm and it'll cost you jut £4.

Tigercats

Tigercats have manfully stepped in to headline this show! They're snazzy
pop is a real delight, too. They've released stuff on the fab Haircut
Records. And they've got a new 7" due on WeePOP! soon (I think!). They're
ace. But don't take my word for it. Here is what others have said about
them:

"TIGERCATS write songs about Stevie Nicks and Whitechapel, all delivered
atop a cloud of shimmering dream rock. Drums twist and guitars bloom like
fireworks, whilst a plaintive vocal sounding eerily like Pete Shelley
underpins their sound". - Upset the rhythm

"A brand new band featuring members of Esiotrot and Hexicon, east London’s
Tigercats reimagine The Wave Pictures and Violent Femmes as spiky,
infectious post-punk anti-heroes. We haven’t heard a new band sound this
perfectly-formed for quite some time" - How Does It Feel To Be Loved

Bordeauxxx
http://www.myspace.com/bordeauxxxmusic
http://soundcloud.com/bordeauxxx

This London band are new kids on the block and they deal in joyful melodic
harmonic pop. They've recently 'released' a free download EP so you can
check them out before the show.

"Apparently they started out as a bit of an 80′s throwback band, well i'm
glad that all changed, Mothers Ruin is a brilliant and massively exciting
EP from a new and even more exciting band" - Hey Man, Check My Band

The Whatevers

These DIY urchins from the North (er Leeds, possibly?) play shambolic and
tuneful indiepop. They too, are very new. And I think everyone is going to
love them. They've released a free EP on Holiday Records and have got a few
bits and bobs including the fab 'Art and Sex' LP for sale on Bandcamp.

"Full of rattley guitars, ropey singing and shoouty bits in the right
places, most of the songs here sound a little like late '90s heroes Uresei
Yatsura and, at times, early Hefner." - A Layer Of Chips

WHICH WAY IS UP!

The Musical Comedy Awards is back! Now in it's fourth year, the MCA has grown in stature to become an annual fixture in the comedy calendar and the best place to see the UK's finest up and coming musical comedians alongside some of the best established acts of the genre on the circuit. The competition has also played host to stars of the genre such as Mitch Benn, David O' Doherty, Bo Burnham and many more.

THE WILMO DELIGHTS THE INDEPENDENT
1st May 2011

A lovely bit of press for The Wilmo:

"Further down towards Exmouth Market, the Wilmington Arms is setting itself up as pretender to its crown. At the monthly night run by the sketch troupe Ladygarden, it's not unusual to see stars from Peep Show's Isy Suttie to Lenny Henry performing to a 40-strong crowd, spot Jennifer Saunders at the bar or bump into Ash Atalla, the producer of The Office, scouting for new talent."

See below for context.
