Now in its third year, the Musical Comedy Awards (MCA) are back for another celebration of the UK’s best emerging and established musical comedians!
After the total sell out success of last year’s MCA, WeGotTickets have this year partnered up with Avin a Larf to sponsor the Best Newcomer Category in this prestigious competition to discover, support and promote the best emerging talent in the UK’s growing musical comedy community.
With some of the biggest names in comedy, acts such as Bill Bailey and Tim Minchin, popularising the genre, the MCA have grown in stature to become a key date in the comedy calendar and a launch pad for many careers.
Having been selected by a panel of industry judges from the website www.musicalcomedy.co.uk, the UK’s top 40 emerging musical comedy acts will compete in a series of heats between January and March at the Wilmington Arms, with each show headlined by established stars of the circuit. From each heat of ten acts, the audience and judges will vote for their favourite five acts to progress to the next stage. The Final of the MCA will then take place on March 19th at the New Players Theatre, Embankment.
All of the MCA shows will be hosted by the 2010 MCA Runners Up, the brilliant HORSE & LOUIS - “See them before they're big, otherwise you'll regret it.” - BRITISH COMEDY GUIDE

recording credentials. But strip that all away and w...hat is left? Well,
damn fine tunes, anthemic songs and outstanding stage presence. Bits of
Elbow, Editors and Futureheads combine with massive pop melodies to create
songs that should be heard by the masses and sung along to at festivals by
the summer of 2011.

well, old. Shapes are upstarts, no two ways about it, but don't let that
put you off. These boys are fresh, energetic and play with an enthusiasm

Collective, Jamie T and an indier Biffy make for a great experience live.

No one's quite sure where it'll end.

The Domino State make “brooding, intense music that knocks spots off much
of the competition” (The Independent). On August 16th, they released their
hotly anticipated debut album Uneasy Lies the Crown, recorded late
2009/early 2010 at Treacle Studios, East London and produced by Joe Adams
(Radio Academy award winner 2010 - best live music producer).
Uneasy Lies the Crown was officially launched by the band on August 13th
with a special free in-store show at Rough Trade East, who were
exclusively stocking advance copies of the album.
The album release comes after numerous prestigious support slots including
the O2 Arena with Coldplay and tours with M83 and Longview, as well as
festival appearances including Glastonbury and Summer Sundae Weekender.
The band’s previous single “Firefly” was released last summer and picked
up instantly by iTunes and placed on their “what’s hot” compilation
featuring their pick of the latest UK releases. It was also that week’s
“hottest download” in The Sunday Times.
They have received worldwide airplay, including the UK (BBC, XFM , NME
Radio, Kerrang Radio, BFBS Radio), Germany (Motor FM, Radio Fritz, NDR
Radio), USA (Britsound Radio), Italy (Radio Città Aperta), Peru (Kool Rock
Radio), and have been Steve Lamacq's BBC6 rebel playlist winners.

Moustache Of Insanity
Moustache Of Insanity are Nik (keyboards and giggles) and Bill (guitar and moustache). We first came across them supporting one of Bill’s various other bands (probably Allo Darlin’ or with Darren Hayman’s Secondary Modern) and were immediately blown away with their infectious and outrageously fun take on indiepop. Fiendishly simple songs about sending postcards to strangers over the internet, books and the soon-to-be swedish punk classic Kaktus is all it takes to take us to a place with no worries, a world where we can just spend all our time with friends dancing and singing along to pop. We love them.

Horowitz
Described as “the sound of the indiepop underground,” Horowitz formed in 2004 as a three-piece bedroom project. Since then they have released a full-length LP, 5 singles and numerous compilation tracks, memorably coining the slogan ‘Popkids of the World Unite!’ on the b-side of their first single for Cloudberry Records, 2007’s ‘Tracyanne.’ Practically bleeding DIY ethics, the band have taken their Pavement-meets-Subway Organization brand of noise pop to Germany, Sweden and the U.S, playing some of the finest indiepop clubs and festivals including Cosy Den in Stockholm and the 2010 NYC Popfest.
They’ve also released singles with WeePop, Paper Tiger and Glo-Fi.

Lisa Bouvier
Lisa Bouvier took the brave leap into the pop world 2007, having grown tired of compromises in various band formations. She quickly made a name in southern Sweden as its most frisky popstar with handclaps, vocal harmonies and a bloodied guitar that could get any pop club or living room dancing along to her catchy songs.
In Lisa’s music the melodies form the center. Melodies that sticks like flypaper and are backed by equally deliberate handclaps, naive pop that push rock riffs and occasionally a beautiful singer / songwriter calm.
With these ingredients Lisa Bouvier suceeds with the true art of being an unpretentious serious pop artist. The lyrics dealing with small bittersweet truths about life, spiced with all manner of popular cultural references in the style of Annika Norlin and Mary LouLord. Behind her, Lisa Bouvier has Skåne, Sweden’s finest musicians, The Pop Messengers, composed of Emmy Hogstrom-Tagesson (vocals, melodica), Lars Diurlin (drums, vocals), Mattias Lidehäll (bass), Håkan Carlsson (git / keyboard / dance) and André Brorsson (piano, dance). Together they also play in Stars In Coma. Following magnificent sets with her band across the pop clubs of Europe, she’ll be playing a flurry of solo gigs in the UK in the new year.

Lost Summer Kitten
I first came across Lost Summer Kitten sometime in 2006, having stumbled upon their song Love Song No. 1 and instantly adored it’s melancholic bittersweetness. It quickly became a staple of mixtapes made for friends and I couldn’t resist playing it on the radio in Nottingham and Vancouver time and time again, much to the chagrin of fellow presenters who asked whether it was really necessary to play the same song so frequently (answer: yes, it was).
Fast forward 4 years to a cold February evening in 2010 and I’m meeting a few Swedes in the pub in Camden before heading over to the opening night of London Popfest. At that point, I barely knew them, having met only once before at a Twee As Fuck night a few months earlier. Conversation turned to the songs we’d put on mix CDs for the mix exchange at the popfest alldayer, and, old habits being hard to break, Lost Summer Kitten was on the CD I’d painstakingly put together. Turns out I was drinking “jugs of whatever” ale with LSK, who promptly reformed on the 242 bus back into the city after a few more beers to serenade the passengers with their sublime three-way harmonies of love, loss and loneliness. They’ve never been far from my heart since.

an everyday band. Comparisons are futile and likenesses cannot be drawn
but if you like motivational speaking over big beats and live trumpets
then you might just love Gilbert. You might also need some medication...

this High Wycombe duo make an almighty and infectious racket using toy

be either huge or a hilarious flash in the pan at the expense of East
London trendyists! The reality is they are just mental. The music is

Joe Lycett takes MCing duties for his Bright Club debut. He was best
newcomer at the 2010 Chortle Awards, so it'll be interesting to see
what he's been up to since then.
Strawberry & Cream return to their spiritual home, showcasing their
own songs alongside the usual array of sexy covers.

Zoe Self studies how race-horses work. They're pretty big and that's a
lot of muscle, bone and tendon to track. She won't be giving out tips
for the 4.15 at Chepstow.
Jon Butterworth smashes particles into one another using a little
piece of apparatus called the Large Hadron Collider. You might have
heard of it.
Dom Furniss is a human-computer interactions specialist, and he
tackles the really big questions like "Why don't things just
work?!?!?!"
Ryan Nicholl flies balloons in the antarctic looking for neutrinos. He
also has more magnets in his office than anyone I've met in my life.
Tom Manly is a neuroscientist. He'll popping open a few skulls to see
what's going on inside.

When we read that we had the honour of doing the St Patrick's day show at
the Wilmo we were dead chuffed. Then we realised that we didn't know any
good Irish bands. So, we've gone for entirely non-Irish bands of supreme
quality and free whisky on the door until the bottle runs out. In the
words of Sean Connery, it's a compromyje...

Formed in an abandoned shoe factory (Ambassadors of Morocco is Victorian
slang for a shoemaker), this London based quartet have had quite a ride
since their launch in autumn 2010. A savvy blend of early Blur, the Cure
and Depeche Mode has created a sound heavy of melody and big of hook. With
6Music and XFM already on board and songs like the oh-so-topical Wikipedia
being hailed as modern classics, AoM look set to be one of the feel-good
hits of this summer.

Vets in Hong Kong are a new school band with old school sensibilities.
They put on their own nights, produce a zine (no blogs here) and play
quality songs crafted in the style of Arcade Fire, Death From Above,
Vampire Weekend and Mars Volta. Following the release of their debut E.P.
in February 2011, ViHK are picking up momentum despite their early stages.
And if all else fails, they can easily go and treat sick pigs in the old
colony....

Electro Folk Garage. No, not somewhere that robots go to get repaired but
instead is Cambridge's finest, Model Staggs. Confusingly, they aren't
Stags either but rather the dynamic duo of Ash and Tom playing fierce
guitar and drum driven tunes with the raw energy of the White Stripes and
the foppish charm of Mumford & Sons. So, confusing descriptions aside, it
all sounds marvellous. What a relief?!

The Sunny Street have been quietly kicking up a fuss over the past few years with appearances at the Indietracks festival, the legendary Nottingham Indiepop all dayer, a tour of Sweden and the awesome Let's kiss and make up Indie Pop Days weekender in Berlin. Their new album, "Hidden For Decades" is coming out soon on Plastilina records, too.

Owl + Mouse hail from London and they have played for HDIF and had Ian (from HDIF) enthused about their mesmerising set so much so that I had to book them. Their sound is a delicate and gentle folky take on indiepop which manages to sound a little like Allo Darlin’, with a dash of The Magnetic Fields (check out their cover of 'The Book of Love' on their My Space!) and hints of Camera Obscura at their most vulnerable. Here comes our Easter Special and it's ruddy eggcellent. From the outset
we need to point out that this is the night before Good Friday so you can
drink, dance, drink some more and then sleep all through the next day
before waking up to eat the brown treats the Easter Bunny has left for
you. The chocolate, not the shit (lawsuit avoided). But before all that
happens we're giving you a very special night of live music which
goes......a little....something....like.....this!

They're back! MFC Chicken absolutely blew our minds in December at the
Christmas show so we got them back just as soon as we could. For those of
you who are uninitiated in the ways of the Chicken then just know that the
MFC boys play rock'n'roll the good old fashioned way. Raw bass, smooth
organ, driving drums, wailing guitar, booming sax, sing-a-long lyrics and
a whole lot of sweat. And if that doesn't convince you then let it be
known that MFC Chicken are the first band we've given an hour long set to
- yes, they're just that good.

We first discovered these guys supporting We Rock Like Girls Don't and
they blew us away. A rockin' two piece from Venezuela that have more balls
than the lottery show and bigger chops than an oversized butchers. Bourbon
Army are a band that are way more than the sum of their parts and the
parts are pretty damn impressive....if you know what I mean.

Sheffield gun slingers The Clench are 6 horseman of the A-rock-olypse and
they are riding in to London town for the first time to steal your horse
and get with your woman. They play Country with a hard edge, music you can
light a match on if you will. Think of the music Clint would have an his
i-pod while he rode across the prairy - if any of that was remotely
historically possible. We can but dream...
As usual it's all kicking off at 8ish and it'll cost you nothing more than

The Musical Comedy Awards is back! Now in it's fourth year, the MCA has grown in stature to become an annual fixture in the comedy calendar and the best place to see the UK's finest up and coming musical comedians alongside some of the best established acts of the genre on the circuit. Over the years the MCA have provided a launch pad to superstar acts like Frisky and Mannish (2009 Finalists), Abandoman (2010 winners) and Jay Foreman (Best Newcomer 2009 and now touring with Dave Gorman) and created a thriving independent platform to celebrate the artform that is musical comedy. The competition has also played host to stars of the genre such as Mitch Benn, David O' Doherty, Bo Burnham and many more.
