Hello all

Poor, poor football fans. Hush now… you know deep down it was all a patriotic delusion. BUT you can still enjoy the rest of The World Cup here in our venue on our massive screen. Just pick a new nation that know how to play as a team, et voila.

For those who will scream at the sound of yet another vuvuzela droning on you will be pleased to know it’s nearly over and we have a fantastic line up of gigs to refresh your ears with plus a deluge of Edinburgh previews giving a healthy dose of laughing gas to the proceedings.

Much love

SOPHIE BLACK + BRIDGET CHRISTIE EDINBURGH PREVIEWS Sunday 18th July 2010

SOPHIE BLACK - A Sketch Show
If.comedy and Chortle nominee Sophie Black (Fat Tongue) previews her highly anticipated first solo Edinburgh show.  Meet the only art teacher in the country who can make Leonardo di Caprio look like an ageing triad and the movie director who almost cast ET in 8 Mile. Plus find out what happened to Sadaam Hussein at the Splash and Fun Water Park in Malta. “The most original sketch act around” The Times, “Quality simply shines through” Chortle ****, “Wrenchingly funny” Fest ****

BRIDGET CHRISTIE - A ANT
Bridget Christie used to dress up as Charles II, talk about the English Civil War and pretend to be The Great Plague.  But this had no commercial value, so she gave up on that pointless nonsense.  This year she’s talking about cat-shit, priests and rude mothers. Bridget is supported by the first ever and so far the finest Ant comedian on the circuit, A Ant (Winner Nivea Funny Ant Competition 1993).  “Cheerful surrealist” (Guardian). “Utterly entertaining” (Times).   "Brilliantly, uniquely funny…what truly alternative fringe comedy should be" (Chortle).  “Like watching a young Frances De La Tour” (Barry Cryer).

8pm. £5 each or £7 for both.

ODD BOX PRESENTS Tuesday 20th July 2010

The Blanche Hudson Weekend
Boy Genius
Insect Guide
Micktravis

8pm. £5

Odd Box is warming up for Indietracks by putting on this amazing pop show.

THE BLANCHE HUDSON WEEKEND (Leeds)
Top of the bill are The Blanche Hudson Weekend (featuring ex Manhattan Love Suicides, Darren and Caroline). The band are set to cause a stir with their first ever live appearance.

"Noise And Fury is a sugar laced melodic buzz bomb cemented by windswept effervescent skrees of MBV feedback albeit informed by a Ramones mindset" - Losing Today

BOY GENIUS (Brooklyn)
Boy Genius are doing a small UK tour before their appearance at Indietracks and I am delighted they're playing their only London show for Odd Box. The band have been firm favourites here since their 'Eureka' EP came out back in 2007. Three years on the band have released their 2nd full length 'Staggering' on Greenpop Recordings.

""Brooklyn quartet Boy Genius has the same no-fuss charm that characterized a lot of 80s college rock: simple hooks, harmonies and melodies, ringing guitars - reliable stuff" - Time Out New York

INSECT GUIDE (Leeds)
Formed in Leeds in late 2005, Insect Guide ? Su Sutton and Stan Howells ? have been sending ripples through the musical underground ever since thanks to their distinctive brand of DARK, CINEMATIC POP. Now expanded to a three piece by the addition of drummer Chris Cooper (Pale Saints) the band have recently recorded a session for Marc Riley on BBC 6 Music. Their 2nd LP" DARK DAYS & NIGHTS" is set to be released in July 2010 on Squirrel Records.

The band have picked up a lot of praise over the past few years:

?accessible and joyously barbed pop songs? - UNCUT (debut of the month)
"an irresistible pop masterpiece" - DROWNED IN SOUND
?a beautiful and idiosyncratic pop album? - SUBBA-CULTCHA

MICKTRAVIS (Blackburn)
Micktravis is the continuing alias of ex tompaulin songwriter Jamie Holman. Tompaulin enjoyed a three LP and seven single career, mostly with the fantastic Track And Field label; notching up two John Peel Sessions and shows all over Europe along the way. Jamie is now releasing records on the winterbird label and continues to write confessional songs about girls and fighting.

Also giving away a free 7" single by The Fischers (featuring Micktravis) for the first 50 people through the door!

DEATH & GLORY Thursday 29th July 2010

CRUELLA RIBBONS + NATURE SET + MARY AT MIDNIGHT + CANVEY ISLAND

Doors @ 7.30pm, First band on at 8.30pm.

£3.

CRUELLA RIBBONS (www.myspace.com/cruellaribbons)

Cruella was an Equation once. For those of you that knew Theoretical Girl then that will make sense. For the rest of you it’s a mathematical nightmare born from 101 Dalmations. But I digress. Cruella is actually an Aussie settled in London who goes by the name of Kelly White and writes damn fine grungey-pop songs.  P.I.X. Zine have described her as “Appealing, sultry and insightful” but the best description comes from the lady herseld; “If Liza Minelli had a baby with Courtney Love and saturated the child’s life with post punk girl bands and Dusty Springfield...this is what would come out”.  Tempted? You should be.

NATURE SET (www.myspace.com/natureset)

Sheffield’s Nature Set are still fairly young in band years but the experience and talent of their parts far outweigh this infantile state. With former members of the Long Blondes, Bon Bon Club and the Millipedes, Nature Set are something of a Sheffield super group and their first clutch of tunes is nothing to be sniffed at. If You Lived Here You’d Be Home By Now is already a brooding, and insanely catchy favourite at Ravenous towers. This will be their first London show so come on down and check out a bit of history in the making.

more info on the bands:

Mariner's Children http://myspace.com/benedictdaniel
The Mariner's Children are a 7 piece alt. folk band that play densely textured, upbeat, heartfelt and intense folk music. Meshing the intricate guitar interplay of Pentangle with the barnstorming raucousness of Arcade Fire. They toured with Peggy Sue last WInter and are releasing their debut EP later this year.

Paperplain http://myspace.com/helenpaperplain
Paperplain is the alias of analogue-loving Helen Page. The delicately sweet and dreamy lo-fi folk single ‘11:30’ was released as part of the Too Pure Singles Club and a video containing the track clocked up over a million views on Youtube. In January she was listed as one of The Times' top ten acts to look out for in 2010.

‘Helen has one of those voices that feels like she’s singing to you personally, and she employs the eight-track to great effect. Her hushed tones and raw talent, hidden behind the hiss and clicks, results in endearingly honest music.’ - Vinyl Junky

The Tender Hips are a London-based four piece with influences ranging from 60s garage to 90s alt-rock, via girl-groups and an array of dead and broken-hearted country singers. Their genre-bending approach to classic songwriting combines growling guitars with driving beats, soaring vocals and ghostly harmonies, and will make you tap your feet and examine your conscience.

Small Engine Repair play their own style of alternative lo-fi pop music and are currently appearing alongside Emmy the Great and Peter Bjorn & John on the Chris Coco compiled album 'Acoustic Chill.' They have recently worked with John Bundrick (The Who) and have been played on radio shows in the UK and Ibiza-ooooh!

The Lovely Eggs + Hexicon + Moustache Of Insanity + The Queens Head

8pm. £5.

Headliners The Lovely Eggs are a 2 piece band from Lancaster, United Kingdom. They consist of married couple Holly Ross and David Blackwell. Ross was formerly the lead singer and guitarist in the popular all girl band Angelica(now split). David Blackwell was guitarist in Lancaster drone band 3D Tanx, who performed at Tate Britain with artist Linder Sterling and also with Damo Suzuki (ex Can)

Hexicon Mike, Paul and Tom started Hexicon in 2004, beginning life as a lo-fi voice/guitar/french horn combo and have since grown into a five-headed monster with Greg and Andy as a drumming tag team, and Giles on bass.

Moustache of Insanity are a London based indiepop duo who make funny, dance-able pop tunes about whatever they like - from postcards to old cassette mix tapes. Committed to DIY ethic they began with, all their records are made by hand and self recorded.

The Queen's Head started as a whim of Mr.Speaker's, unhappy with his self-imposed 'ideas' of what was 'good'. But it quickly became much more than a mere giggle on the side of his other successful sonic behemoth - SubAudible Hum - and took on an earth-shattering importance second to none.

The Wilmington gig will give them an opportunity to celebrate their coming together and put on a night to remember. There will be guests of the special variety and pigs wrapped in blankets.
The night will also see the triumphant return of The Toy Band to the east london live scene. Not content with one Lovatt banging the drums? Fear not, as Michael's younger brother Peter will be sharing the same skins for The Toy Band.

The Fancy Dress Party + more TBC

Doors – 8.30pm

Price - £5 (includes a 7’’ copy of Fancy Dress Party debut release) limited hand numbered copies.

The Fancy Dress Party has stood out from their local Essex music scene since their inception.

On stage violins, Ukuleles and balalaika sit together with contemporary instruments to create a sound that falls on the right side sincerity.

Their first single ‘Grandfather’ begins sparsely and delicately and slowly creeps into lush tenderness that can be held close to the heart.

3 members are currently at University and the band reconvenes in the holidays to play a handful of packed shows around Essex and London.

There youngest member Tom is only just dong his GCSE’s.

Sweet Release Records is a brand new singles label that releases 200 hand numbered limited 7’’ vinyl with each offering (also available digitally).

The song ‘Grandfather’ was recorded at Abbey Road Studios (where Christian, ½ of Sweet Release, works) and was completed in the labels Essex studio.

This is one of ‘The Fancy Dress Party’s’ quieter moments in their live set and we recommend you experience there more energetic moments live where layers of glocks and drums from the six members creates a cacophony of loveliness.

ODD BOX Friday 10th September 2010

The Blanche Hudson Weekend + The Sunday Reeds (Australia) + Evans The Death

Doors 8pm. £4 door (£3 advance).

The Blanche Hudson Weekend
A return to the Wilmington Arms for The Blanche Hudson Weekend (featuring former Manhattan Love Suicidues duo Caroline and Darren and other assorted weekenders) after the storming set at the Indietracks festival. Bringing to you all kinds of noise, fuzz, melody, dissonance, rawness, killer tunes and buzzsaw pop. Take a bit of 1960s girl group sounds, mix with Girls In The Garage type ramshackle production, add some gun slugging guitars and sugar sweet vocals with a keen ear for a great hook.

"The beauty lies in the simplicity (of the song). It tries not to do much and because of it, achieves more" - Drowned In Sound on recent single 'Let Me Go'.

The Sunday Reeds (Australia)
The Sunday Reeds are a female-fronted noise pop/rock band named after Melbourne patron of the arts Sunday Reed. The love-child of some kind of rock 'n' roll orgy between The Jesus and Mary Chain, Joy Division, The Ramones and The Velvet Underground. Driving bass lines, plenty of guitar feedback, primitive pounding rock beats and alto, sex-laden female vocals. If Nico had joined The Ramones, strapped on a bass guitar, and a whole lot more noise was added, this is how it might have sounded. After spending much time songwriting and recording in a hell-hole apartment, founding members Romana Ashton and Drew Jones were joined in early 2009 by drummer Andy Dawson. And then there were three... The Sunday Reeds' debut album 'Drowning in History' is out now through Squirrel Records

Evans The Death
A conjoining of the unlikely twin towns of Chelmsford and Clapham, Evans The Death is, in truth, the creation of five like minds temporarily parted by the A10. Drawing inspiration from the independently minded guitar bands of the 80’s and with a healthy disdain for the concept of stardom, Evans The Death songs put high stock on the intelligence of lyrics and the primacy of melody. Despite actively avoiding the well trodden route of hype gigs and fervent web activity to gain a name, their ‘Sleeping Song’ has already been a fixture of the more forward thinking blogs.

HOPEHOUSE RECORDS PRESENT

DEATH AND GLORY Thursday 16th September 2010

The second installment of the mighty Death & Glory and the quality acts
just keep on coming. Without further ado, I give you....

DORA BRILLIANT (www.myspace.com/dorabrilliantuk)
London trio Dora Brilliant are infectious. Seriously, don’t touch them –
they’ll give you a disease and until an antidote is discovered we can’t be
sure you’ll survive. I jest, of course, it is their tunes that are
infectious and tracks like ‘Not My Face ...Please’ and ‘Human Being’ will
have you twitching and jittering all night long. A Dora Brilliant live
show is a rare beast so you don’t want to miss this chance to see one of
the scene’s most intriguing and exciting bands. I wasn’t joking though,
don’t touch them...

STAGES OF DAN (www.myspace.com/stagesofdan)
Three men named Chris in a band named after a Dan playing songs that will
make you dance like an agitated Llama. Three statements, only one of them
is true. Fear not though, the bit about the songs is all true and their
brand of rock’n’pop’n’folk’n’blues is really starting to turn some heads
these days. Steve Lamacq described their feel-good track ‘Gary’ as “the
catchiest song I have heard in a long time” and they just keep churning
them out. There is no fat on these boys, just three lean men playing meaty
songs hung on shiny pop hooks. Hmmm, abattoir rock anyone?

THE B OF THE BANG (www.myspace.com/thebofthebang)
Southsea’s finest, The B Of The Bang, return for their third Ravenous show
because we simply love them that much! Using everything from Mandolins to
Moogs, Wit and his merry troupe make 21st century music for 21st century
minds with a 19th century touch of class. The Fly called them “An
unpredictable concoction of anti-folk, malice-laden vocals, psychedelic
big-top clown breakdowns and smatterings of B-movie horror soundtracks”
and we think that sums them up nicely. Certainly the kind of band that
should be gracing your ipod at 3.00am on the nightbus to give you that
sense of wonder at the world!

A.J. DUNNE (www.myspace.com/alexjdunne25)
London based Texan Alex J. Dunne is more frequently seen as part of the
fantabulous Winterhours but is an outstanding artist in his own right.
Drawing on the likes of Jeff Buckley, the mellower moments of Beck, Bon
Iver and the National, Dunne creates sparse yet filmic tunes that could be
the soundtrack to many a break up. Perfect for to start a show that
heralds the start of Autumn then! Come get your folk on...

It all kicks of at 7.30pm and will cost you £3 for the pleasure. And we'll
throw in some Recharged Radio DJs to keep things fun!

THE MONKEYBALL EXPERIMENT Saturday 25th September 2010

HELMHOLTZ RESONATORS SOUNDSYSTEM + THE EMPTY GESTURES + CLIP STAMP FOLD + KING ROBOT

A top notch evening of leftfield alt-rock with foot-tapping electronic quirks liberally scattered amidst the guitars and caterwauling... not a shaky half-baked bunch of jangly indie wannabes insight, just great, impressive thought provoking good-time daftness/earnestness/nessness...

8pm. £5 / £3 members (www.tinyurl.com/spoonface)

The Empty Gestures - Recently described as “the drunk British Tom Waits” (indiefolkforever), Paul Hawkins is one of the most compelling, unusual and imaginative new songwriters in Britain today. His songs evoke the emotional primacy of Nick Cave, the imaginative storytelling of Jonathan Richman and the wit of Jarvis Cocker to produce dark fantastical narratives on subjects ranging from teenage boys who throw themselves into nuclear reactors in the hope of gaining superpowers to lonely outsiders who don medical coats and operate on unsuspecting bystanders. The Empty Gestures are the guitarless & drumless Euro-sinister electro-pop distillation of his regualar ant-folk kraut-rock backing band The Awkward Silences.

Paul is a key figure in the contemporary UK antifolk scene.

DEATH & GLORY Thursday 21st October 2010

7.30pm doors - £3 entry

The third instalment of the mighty Death & Glory and the beasts of new
music just keep on coming. Without further ado, I give you....

PHILADELPHIA MAINLINE (www.myspace.com/philadelphiamainline)
Scuzz Blues duo Philadelphia Mainline are awesome – in the truest sense of
the word. They contain raw Blues power and have literally rattled the
bones of everyone they play in front of, which is doubly impressive as
there are only two of them! Christian Muncey and Matt Veal (for they are
Philadelphia Mainline) have the swagger of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
and the tightness of the White Stripes along with the style of Hives.
Stool Pigeon said they had “Holy Golightly-ish R & B menace with a 13th
Floor Elevators spin” and that’s a pretty good description but it doesn’t
even come close to the real thing. Maybe you should come close to the real
thing...but not too close.

THE DASH (www.myspace.com/the_dash)
London rockers The Dash seem to have it all sussed out. They’ve supported
the likes of Gossip, Editors and Biffy Clyro. They’ve recorded their
second single with Mik Whitnall of Babyshambles. They’re lined up to
record their album with Strokes producer Gordon Raphael. Plus they have
their own radio show on Recharged Radio. But are they actually any good?
Oh hell yeah. The Dash play Rock’n’roll smothered in attitude and dripping
with desire. Great hooks, ear-worm lyrics and live performances that will
leave you breathless are all part of the package as well. Be prepared to
fall in lust and be prepared to get sweaty. You have been warned.

BOBBY PETROV (www.myspace.com/bobbypetrov)
We like to bring you new music at Death & Glory and they don’t come much
newer than Bobby Petrov. Formed in the Summer of 2010 they have quickly
amassed a reputation as a mental live act with two singers adding extra
bite to the performance. Talking their lead from the likes of the
Maccabees, Mystery Jets, and Arctic Monkeys, Bobby Petrov mix up a
refreshingly summery sound which will help smooth over the pain of the
onslaught of Autumn! This will be their first London show so come get
yourself a slice of History in the making.

THE LONE GROOVER (www.myspace.com/thelonegrooveruk)
The Lone Groover (or Brian Caulfield to his mum) is named after a comic
strip anti-hero from the 1970s and that will give you the best indication
of his musical leanings. He is a one man punk band with a message that he
has to get heard playing his Folk music for the city.

ODD BOX PRESENTS Thursday 28th October 2010

Standard Fare
http://www.standardfare.co.uk/

Standard Fare are one of those bands. One of those bands you can't help falling in love with after you first hear them. They have wowed audience at home and abroad, including playing at SXSW during the past 12 months. The band have also performed at this years Latitude and Indietracks festivals to great acclaim.

Their debut LP "The Noyelle Beat" (released on Thee SPC) has picked rave reviews:

"A riot of hormones, cut-to-the-chase lyrics, bolshie girl-boy vocals and jingle-jangle propusion...The best and most loveable aspects of indie guitar music."
The Sunday Times

"An album that is as close to perfection as you could hope for."
Artrocker

"Is it one of the best albums I've heard so far this year? Hell yeah."
The Line Of Best Fit

Kid Canaveral
http://www.kidcanaveral.co.uk/

A quartet from Scotland that over the past couple of years have released a string of irristeable 7" singles. With punchy songs about dancing, drinking and love, Kid Canaveral are one of the best new bands doing the rounds.

The band have just released their debut LP 'Shouting At Wildlife' to widespread praise:

BBC Radio 1 Introducing...In Scotland ALBUM OF THE MONTH July 2010

"Once in a while a band comes along that just makes your heart sing - Abba, The B-52s, The Housemartins. All created gloriously melodic pop that filled you to bursting with happiness. Kid Canaveral do the same. If there's one album you buy this year by a band you don't know, then this should be the one." DAILY RECORD

"Like the old adage that you're never further than six feet from a rat in a major city, the feeling with this debut from the St Andrews-formed act is that you are never more than 30 seconds from a hook. Taking the best principles of pop-punk - pogo-friendly rhythms, catchy choruses and at-times frantic instrumental interplay - the four-piece put singalong, instantly memorable tunes at the core of their sound." IS THIS MUSIC? **** (four stars)

The Understudies
http://www.myspace.com/wearetheunderstudies

The Understudies are Brian, Graeme, Bree and Kris. They've been gaining a reputation on the London indiepop scene as something of a hidden treasure during the past 12-18 months. With a sharp guitar and heartfelt songs that, at their best, recall Belle and Sebastian, The Smiths and Butcher Boy.

"...with a natural warmth and almost super human honesty, The Understudies are truly a band to fall for. [They] are one of those bands that charm you from the heart outward as soon as you hear them. Its probably down to the mixture of the authenticity of the shy, frail vocals and the raw honesty in the songs - songs of real proper love.... Live favourite 'Chip pan glam' comes across like The Smiths 'Hand in glove' via a 50's edition of Coronation Street. With nourishment for the heart and for the hips...Fabulous" - BRILL DREAM

Guest DJ: Rocker (Dandelion Radio)

We've been after these guys for a while and frankly we're very excited especially as they've just released their wonderful new album 'Trials'

Trials’ is the second album by shady bard, released on October 11th and preceded by the double download release of ‘Trials (Part III)’/’Daphne’. With tracks from their debut having already featured in US TV dramas such as Grey’s Anatomy, the band return with a new record filled with cinematic instrumentation and symphonic pop songs.

If you don't want to just take my word for it here's what some other people have to say:

“A band it would be easy to fall in love with...dazzling.” The Sunday Times

“Delicate songs...cracked hope...a marvel” Channel 4

“The spoken word symphonies of iLiKETRAiNS and the evocative harmonies of Low...A record that becomes more engaging with every listen.” 9/10 Drowned in Sound

Ever wondered what music tigers dance to? Look no further! Lisbonne is the musical alias of singer/songwriter marie m, a french girl exiled in London, who when not on tour with her band Monade, writes dreamy pop songs in her bedroom. The perfect soundtrack for sunny afternoons laying in the sun.

"Music of amazing breadth and depth...bursting with energy and enthusiasm"
- Robert Sandall, BBC Radio 3.

Codename Sparrow: Singer/guitarist/songwriter, with a full array of the talents. Used to be in a bunch of beat combos you've never heard of with names too awful to mention in public. Lo-fi indie rock and sadcore masterpieces since 2005!
http://www.myspace.com/codenamesparrow

Nick Byrne: Sweeping through areas of folk and rock music, 'Self-titled EP' is a captivating listen; include a lot more textures, dynamics and instruments than the average solo project, and there is surely much more to come from the twenty one year old musician.

Library Tapes: 10:10
Clem Leek: 9:30
Isnaj Dui: 8:50
Wild Dogs in Winter: 8:10

Doors 8 pm
Tickets £3.99 (advance) / £5 (door)

Library Tapes: "More than any other instrument, the piano sounds like a leap of faith, something impossibly bulky lifting off arduously, but feather-light in the air, spanning the chasm between silences as if suspended by its own purling tones" (pitchfork.com)
http://www.myspace.com/librarytapes

Clem Leek is from the South East. He has just completed his MA in Music Composition an is now releasing his first E.P. Clem draws his influence from the minimalist composers Steve Riech & Philip Glass and also such musicians as Keith Kennif, Max Richter, Matt Hales, creating a beautiful mix of piano melodies and subtle instrumentation, all set to the crackle of a 78rpm record.
http://www.myspace.com/clemleekofficial

Standing somewhere between modern classical and electronica, Isnaj Dui conveys a minimal yet capturing sound using electronically manipulated flutes and homemade instruments.
'Deeply inspiring music from a very, very special place' - Nils Frahm
http://www.myspace.com/isnajdui

"...it is hard to label Wild Dogs in Winter's sound, as they seem to take something from every genre. Electronica, Folk, and of course post-rock are all ingredients that they use wisely to create a fresh and interesting combination".

We're Back!

This month's compere is Jim Smallman, who has seen a little bit of ink in his time, and music comes from Banjo-playing wisecracker Sleepy Ed Hicks.

On the expert side, we've got John Troyer, looking at tattoos, Natasha McEnroe, who knows all about fingerprints, Danish printing expert Jakob Stougaard-Nielsen and many many more.

Doors are 8pm and it'll cost you a fiver.

 See you there!

LIFE STORY Wednesday 17th November 2010

"I have had an extraordinary life. From Wellington to Delaware, from Nantwich to Montpellier, from Kazakhstan to Idaho, from Bondi Beach to Mexico, I’ve seen it all. And I’d like to share it with you."

A hilarious new monologue by Fred Gordon, ‘Life Story’ is the alarming tale of one man’s struggle against his questionable instincts. Written entirely in rhyming couplets, it is the epic retelling of an unlikely existence.

8pm.

DEATH AND GLORY Thursday 18th November 2010

Death & Glory 4 is upon us and we have yet another amazing line up for you – we just don’t quit!
This month we’ve gone a little folky and mellow in honour of Autumn so come along and enjoy some
music with depth, humour and poignancy. In November we bring you....

MARMADUKE DANDO (www.myspace.com/marmadukedando)
As a refreshing change to the norm at Ravenous towers it was actually Marmaduke Dando that
found us rather than the other way around. A collective formed around the charismatic Dando, this
8 piece play carefully crafted tunes the deal with the lowest feelings of loneliness and the soaring
moments of pure joy. Songs like ‘Life Can’t Get Any Better’ and ‘If This Is Civilization’ will take you
through a range of complex emotions through the lyrics alone. Musically, Marmaduke Dando sound
like a light night, Absinth session between the Divine Comedy, Gogol Bordello, Matt Bellamy and the
Flaming Lips - which should be enough to raise the staunchest of eyebrows!

LAURA HOCKING & THE LONG GOODBYE (www.myspace.com/laurahocking)
Laura has been around the London scene for a while but now she has beefed up her sound with a
full band her beautiful songs have taken on a luscious and fully formed shape. From ditties about
Autism to tales of female wrestlers, Ms Hocking has amassed a set of songs that will take you from
tears of genuine sadness to tears of laughter within the space of an evening but always with a great
tune and smoothly seductive voice. Whatever your reaction is to her music, you should probably
bring some tissues with you...

ELEPHANT (www.myspace.com/belindagillett)
Imagine Florence kicking it with Elbow while Radiohead work on the production and the ghost of
Edith Piaf floats around the studio. Imagine how good that would sound. Then stop imagining and
enjoy the delights of Elephant. From the far-flung reaches of Felixstowe and Norwich, Elephant
are lead by the enchanting Belinda Gillett who has a voice so powerful you could put tusks on it
and....well, you see where I’m going with that one. Lazy journalism aside, Elephant are marvellous
and this will be a rare appearance in London town so just be sure not to get crushed in the
stampede. Sorry.

LOFTY HEIGHTS (www.myspace.com/theloftyheights)
Lofty Heights are essentially one man but oh my what a man!? A yank in Manor House, a sound
engineer extraordinaire and a purveyor of the best handshakes known to mankind. Then there’s
the music which is some of the best folk-pop tinged with sunshine that you are every likely to hear.
Every instrument sounds dangerously close to being out of tune and every lyric is almost mumbled
through shyness but that is exactly how it should sound. Lofty Heights indeed.

£3 on the door. 8pm.

THE WILMO DELIGHTS THE INDEPENDENT
1st May 2011

A lovely bit of press for The Wilmo:

"Further down towards Exmouth Market, the Wilmington Arms is setting itself up as pretender to its crown. At the monthly night run by the sketch troupe Ladygarden, it's not unusual to see stars from Peep Show's Isy Suttie to Lenny Henry performing to a 40-strong crowd, spot Jennifer Saunders at the bar or bump into Ash Atalla, the producer of The Office, scouting for new talent."

See below for context.
