To round 2011 off, we're going to be giving you a chance to see incredible musicians some of whom are rarely seen in London, with lots of ukeleles, banjos and mandolins to boot!
TEAM A VS TEAM B
A genuinely uplifting 5 piece band, made up of jazz, classical, rock and folk musicians, who'll be travelling down from Manchester to join us this evening. Using a huge array of classical instruments they create wonderful acoustic music which smacks of Beirut, Neutral Milk Hotel and Bjork, among many other influences.
SUN TAILOR
Moving independent folk artist from Tel Aviv, who we're very grateful to have paying us a visit. Soft but intense, Sun Tailor's music envelopes you in soothing tones while maintaining lots of energy. A rare chance to see him before his debut album Like The Tide is released in 2012.
BERNADETTE BENTLEY
A brilliant modern English folk singer, playing guitar, ukelele and concertina. With haunting and mesmerising melodies and sharp lyrics, her music is thoroughly refreshing to hear.
WAR ELEPHANT
A heartfelt duo who play stripped down raw acoustic music. With backgrounds in metal, dance and folk these guitarists capture passionate melodies while maintaining an edge to their music. No strangers to gigging in London, hopefully you'll be following them around the city in their various exploits after seeing them here.
WORRY DOLLS
A wonderful female duo from Liverpool who are fresh on the London scene. Their compelling lyrics, passionate vocal harmonies and beautiful melodies have made us fall in love with them. Also using a variety of instruments, you'll definitely find something to be impressed about in this pair.

SCIENCE SHOWOFF 3 Wednesday 7th December 2011
|
Science Showoff 3's brave and most excellent communicators of science-related-things are:
Rob Davis: “Cat On Yer Head is a multi-player, mass participation game about game design where the audience becomes a human games console. It has appeared at Bright Club, London; GDC Europe, Cologne; and GameCity, Nottingham.”
Strawberry & Cream: “Sultry Strawberry and catastrophic Cream sing two cheeky songs about science. One of which is based on the research of UCL’s Sam Tazzyman!”
Eva Amsen: “Why are so many scientists also musicians? I’ll share some stories of people who just can’t stick to one discipline, and why they are awesome.”
Prof Karmadillo: “Professor Karmadillo will grab your ears with their fantastic catchy songs of science. Come and catch a musical mini-lecture which for this show will focus on genetics.”
Tom Whyntie: “In September, the BBC reported that the (in)famous Higgs Boson could be discovered “by Christmas”. Through the medium of stand-up comedy, Tom Whyntie will attempt to either lead a raucous celebration of the God Particle’s discovery, or deliver a masterclass in “scientific expectation management”.”
Pete Gravell: “I’ll be visualising sound with fire, water, cornstarch, laser beams and jelly all dancing to the beat of Radiohead. I’ll also squeeze in some of the history and physics behind the experiments.”
Rob Wells: “I’ll be teaching the chief method (Doppler Spectroscopy) of how planets are being discovered outside of our solar system with the obligatory tin foil and audience participation.”
Greg Foot: One half of Science Junkies and one whole ball of energy, Greg will be showing us a bunch of his favourite science demos. He’ll probably mention the BBC 3 series he’s just been filming and he will be messy and loud!
Jenna Stevens-Smith: “From scientist to elite athlete and back again, I am going to be talking about my favourite sport and how understanding the science around it makes it even more exciting.”
Zarinah Agnew: Neuroscientist by day, Zarinah has also carved giant brains from the sand of the river Thames, which only survive a few hours before being covered over by the tide. She’ll be sharing a video of this amazing work and telling us what its like to mix your science and your art up.

BRIGHT CLUB: NOISE Tuesday 13th December 2011
|
BANG CRASH WALLOP
WHAT A BRIGHT CLUB!!!!
This month we’re laughing at noise, from sound to speech to all those extraneous things that make it harder to work out what the hell is going on out there.
Ringmaster tonight is Ed Gamble, the noisiest man we could find.
And in expert corner all of these brainboxes:
Giorgio Savini – A physicist and builder of delicate instrumentation, trying to make sense of the noise of the Universe
Mel Pinet – A speech and language scientist, who knows how we understand people when we just can’t hear them
Harry Cliff – A high-energy physicist, who stares at readings of the inifinitesmal and hopes they’re real
Jon Gallagher – a historian of English, who knows all the things normal people used to say, and what they sounded like
Sarah Morgan – an optometrist, who makes a glorious noise about the importance of eyecare
Steve Cross – Bright Club co-organiser, occasional sound engineer and music snob
And a return of the surprising and surreal Sleepy Ed Hicks on the banjo. http://www.fredwoodbear.com/
Tickets are £5, Doors are 7.30pm and it’s all at the Wilmington Arms. See you there!

DEATH AND GLORY CHRISTMAS PARTY Thursday 15th December 2011
|
Well another year has passed and Christmas is nearly upon us, so thoughts turn to family, friends, roasting fires, horrible jumpers and lashing of turkey. But here at Death & Glory our thoughts are turning to dancing, Surf Rock and Chicken!! We have put together a night containing some of the finest old-school rock’n’roll, tailor made for y...ou to dance your socks off too before wandering off in to the snow with a smile on your face and spring in your step. Without further ado, we give you;
MFC Chicken
Anyone who knows the Death & Glory crew will know how much we love the mighty MFC Chicken. This will be their third show for us at the Wilmington and they’ve been better every time. For the uninitiated, the Chicken play some of the finest, tightest and most infectious rock’n’roll this side of the 50’s and anyone not dancing when they hit their stride is either dead or in a coma. Or deaf. Or not in the same room. Anyway, the point is if you like the music of Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis then you will love the truly awesome, sax-fuelled, raw, sexy music of MFC Chicken.
One Fathom Down
Fronted by the furiously enigmatic Sixteen, London trio One Fathom Down play stripped down but souped up psychosurf. Imagine a battered hotrod with the engine of a formula one car that hums like Dick Dale played through Iron Maiden’s sound system. Throw in a healthy dollop of hair grease, more leather than Gary Glitter’s wardrobe and serious sense of raw power and you have something approaching the One Fathom Down experience. No vocals, no pretentiousness, no waste and no boundaries. Get ready for a set that will feel, look and sound like standing at the finishing line of a drag race.
JD Smith
Essex boy Stuart James Durden Smith (JD to his friends) has played over 800 shows and supported the likes of Duane Eddy, Richard Hawley, Jarvis Cocker and Wanda Jackson. His style of Blues, Punk, stomp and slide has gained him many a fan and you should definitely get along early to join the ranks. Expect fierce guitar playing, rasping vocals and something akin to a Rocket From The Crypt solo show. If you like Jon Spencer, the up-tempo side of Nick Cave and Captain Beefheart then you’ll surely fall for the delights of JD Smith.
And as always we recommend you get down early (especially so this month as the first 30 through the door will get a free Christmas mix CD courtesy of Mr Slinn). As always, doors open at 8.00pm, first band on at 8.30pm and it’ll cost you a mere £4. Come and deck our halls people!

WHICH WAY IS UP! Friday 16th December 2011
|
Odd Box is celebrating a fine year of Which Way Is Up! shows at The Wilmington Arms with four cracking bands, mince pies and other festive cheer! ★ Shrag ★ http://www.facebook.com/pages/Shrag/19167559456 http://shragband.wordpress.com/ Shrag are our favourite band. We love them. They've just finished recording their new album. They mix up noisy pop songs with catchy as fuck tunes. They're probably the best live band on our isle fronted by the enigmatic Helen King. They've headlined shows across Europe and toured the UK with The Cribs. They're just finishing up their 3rd album. If it's half as good as last years 'Life! Death! Prizes!' we are in for a treat. “Shrag are a sharp poppy post-punk band smearing their own dark lip gloss on sex and gender…” Pitchfork ★ Just Handshakes (We're British) ★ http://justhandshakeswerebritish.tumblr.com/ From Leeds. Signed to the awesome Elefant Records (Spain). Just Handshakes (We're British) are something of a rarity these days, a British indiepop band that are worth shouting about. Their recent 7" 'New Adventures In Pop' is bright pop music that will make you smile large. The band have played London Popfest and Indietracks in 2011. We think 2012 will be a big year for Just Handshakes (We're British). Come catch them before they take off! ★ Baaneex ★ http://baaneex.com/ Baaneex are Odd Box favourites. Earlier in 2011 we released their debut EP 'Weird Dance'. In 2012 we will be releasing more records by Baaneex because we adore them. Baaneex blend woozy lo-fi pop with a big dirty guitars and a a smattering of punky pop hooks. Their live shows are a rollercoaster of noise and energy. Part punk, part pop, all heart.
★ Pale Man Made ★ http://palemanmade.bandcamp.com/ Pale Man Made from Newcastle takes touches of the best 80 and 90s indie, add a caustic commentary on work, animals, politics and sport and engulf in a whirlwind of boy-girl fuzzy pop. I recently saw them at the Nottingham Indiepop all dayer and they blew me away. Mining a seam of pop tunes last touched by Urusei Yatsura.
£6 in advance: http://www.wegottickets.com/event/141813 £7 on the door.

Over the next few months The Betas will pilot evenings of NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN (and possibly unrepeatable) sketches, each set in a world of their own creation. Four strangers blow in from out the dust.
