CANDIED NONSENSE Thursday 3rd November 2011

Each of the artists will have two sets with an interval in between, so that you can see the various sides to their performances at different points in the evening...

RAD ORCHESTRA
A brilliant 7 piece who fuse delta river blues with Afro beats and folk music using stringed instruments and voices. With members from Pakistan, Ireland and Germany, be prepared for a multi-ethnic sound pooling influences from many cultures.

RUBY COLLEY
Already huge in the Irish music scene, we are immensely excited to be hosting this Belfast-based talent at Candied Nonsense. Armed only with an electric violin, a delay pedal and a loopstation, Ruby creates passionate music drawing on electronic, East European, jazz and classical influences to create exciting and rich textural sounds. Just check out her debut album Murmurations to see what we mean.

ISLA
Three sisters who have been making music together since they were very young. Creating soulful vocal harmonies alongside their alternative pop and down tempo acoustic sounds, they have gained the attention of audiences across the country, including the late great John Peel.

CIARA CLIFFORD
This singer songwriter manages to bring a dynamic energy to soft acoustic music. Influenced by the likes of Alanis Morisette, Tracy Chapman and Skunk Anansie, we can expect an impressive performance from Ciara.

TIM
No stranger to the London gig scene, you may well recognise Tim from many venues across London. Playing music influenced by the Beatles and Elliott Smith, expect a melodic, fascinating and melancholic performance from this burgeoning singer songwriter.

ALICE PHELPS We loved this brilliant singer and harpist when she performed her own compositions in our old venue in Notting Hill. Now we'll have the chance to see her beautiful heartfelt music in full form on harp, bass and piano. We can't wait to see how she's developed over the last few months.

DEATH AND GLORY Thursday 17th November 2011

We here at Death & Glory like to think that we present the cutting edge of new music without resorting to Japanese Reggae or Slovakian Dark Techno. What we always look for though is quality musicianship and excellent songwriting and boy do we have that for you this month. We taking a slightly retro path for November and we urge you to join us...

The Magnetic Mind

These guys are the real deal and no messin’! We’re taking buzz-sa...w guitars, throbbing bass lines, urgent drumming and neoclassical keyboards. Throw in the husky tones of singer Ellie Foden and a huge attention to detail and you’ll be instantly transported back to a time before most of you were even a twinkle in your parent’s pot-smoke clouded eyes. It’s Garage, it’s Psychedlia, it’s a bit Jefferson Airplane and a bit Zombies. Whatever it is, it’s a gorgeous thing to behold and I urge you to pull on your best black turtleneck and striped jeans and get the hell down!

The Choo Choo Trains

Emma, Catherine and Veronica are the Choo Choo Trains and they are here to make you sway and, with any luck, bop. Their brand of Beat-pop takes notes from the likes of the Crystals and Dion & The Belmonts but would sit happily on the bill with the likes of Tennis and Best Coast as well. Phil Spector would have had a field day with this trio (not a murdery way) and we hope you will too (again, not in a murdery way).

Model Staggs

Cambridge duo Model Staggs have graced the D&G stage before and, rather beautifully, they enjoyed playing as much as we enjoyed watching them....so we got them back! Comprising Drums, Guitar and Vocals, these guys play bone rattling, spine chilling Blues that meets with your raw needs and then slips in a sophisticated melody and mind bending lyric just to mess with your head. Way, way more than the sum of their parts.

Chris Bryant

Bit of a shot in the dark this one but many of you will already know Mr Bryant and to know him is to love him. Big Chris, as he is affectionately monikered, is the Bassist in Stages of Dan for the most part but has been putting together a raft of expertly crafted acoustic songs for our pleasure and now is the time to unleash the beast. Expert sharp one-liners, subtlety of song and charm in abundance – and then he’ll play his set!

As always, it’s £4 in and we’ll be flinging the doors open at around 8ish with the first act on at 8.30pm.

PORT - ROYAL+ WINTERLIGHT + DALOT + DERGAR Thursday 24th November 2011

Port-royal

Winterlight

Dalot

Dergar

As part of european tour n5md recording artists port-royal, winterlight and dalot together with special guest dergar play their only UK date this autumn at the Wilmington Arms on November 24th. With port-royal’s headlining set drawing on their extensive catalogue, both dalot and winterlight playing selections from their recent n5md albums and able support from greek artist dergar, the evening promises to be an extended exercise in electronic influenced bliss and beats.

Doors open early at 7.15pm with the first act on at 7.30pm and finish time will be 11pm. Entry on the door is £6 or with advance ticket via wegottickets.com, £5.

http://www.wegottickets.com/sct/ZmKCYmgtfU

Port-royal

Hailed by fans and critics alike as the next evolution in post-millennial post-rock, port-royal's boundless, sandbox approach to the genre fuses elements of ambient techno, shoegaze, and melodic IDM. In 10 years of activity the band have released 6 albums and 5 EPs and toured extensively Europe, former Soviet Union, and former Yugoslavia. Recently the band have brought their clipped, crystalline beats and latent shoegaze tendencies to the fore, balancing chill-room accessibility with frenetic shifts in style from house to slowcore combining layers of gauzy synths, with pulsing, 4-to-the-floor beats as shown on recent albums Dying in Time  and the anthology The Golden Age of Consumerism.

http://n5md.com/artist/port-royal

Winterlight

Winterlight combines shoegaze, ambient and electronic influences to make melodic, ‘post-pop’ instrumentals.

His debut album, Hope Dies Last, suffused with melancholy but also the uplifting hope that characterizes his work, was released by US label n5md in the summer.

The addition of a second guitarist, Jamie, to the Winterlight live set up adds a further dimension as guitars and keyboards melt together in a haze of delay, distortion and reverb soaked melodies which have been described as “like Air playing krautrock”.

http://n5md.com/artist/Winterlight

Dalot

Dalot is the solo project of NYC based expressive electro-acoustic artist Maria Papadomanolaki. An old adage holds that although all music is sound, not all sound is music. Of course, Dalot will literally hear nothing of it. Whether sampling gulls from her window in Brighton or sirens ripping through New York City, all sound has value. Although “ambient” or post-rock are worthy descriptors, influences ranging from soundwash engineers Stars of the Lid, eco-glitch pioneers Boards of Canada and minimal multi-instrumentalist Colleen make comparisons to Papadomanolaki's music difficult. Since 2010 she has been a member of the n5MD stable, a collaboration which led to two full length releases: last year's introspective gem entitled “Loop Over Latitudes” and her most recent album “minutestatic”.

http://n5md.com/artist/Dalot

Dergar

Christos Garmpidakis lives peacefully on a hill near a seaside of crete (chania, greece) and gets inspired by life, nature, art, literature and adored music (art-rock, post-rock, shoe-gaze, folk, indie, electronic, ambient, classical, neoclassical etc.). he uses computers, electric & acoustic instruments, sometimes a few words, to generate profoundly lyrical motives, as he believes that in music we love we meet, research and express our selves, our thoughts, dreams and emotions.  The album fraternity is available through bandcamp.

LEAH KARDOS: FEATHER HAMMER Friday 25th November 2011

Chaos Theory are proud to present three fiercely inventive talents premièring their contemporary works during this one-off event. All of the musicians tonight combine disciplines, technology and defy tradition. In the true spirit of what Chaos Theory wishes to promote, we invite all of you who wish to experience challenging new music and art.

Tickets:

LEAH KARDOS: FEATHER HAMMER

Leah is a multi-talented composer, producer and pianist whose latest work will be showcased tonight. Her breathtaking new album Feather Hammer (released on 19th September) combines tonal and ambient soundscapes which fuse contemporary classical and electronica styles.

The recorded version of Feather Hammer uses the sounds of acoustic pianos, making use of the hammer, strings and wood percussion of the piano as well as playing them conventionally.

Tonight, we will witness a special presentation of the album featuring digital piano, electronics and video art by Matthew Greasley.

LIGETI QUARTET

A brilliantly innovative quartet who we've had the pleasure of hosting at our monthly night Candied Nonsense. Continually looking to promote the music of established and emerging 20th and 21st Century composers, these graduates from the Royal Academy Of Music, Royal College Of Music and Oxford University never shy away from the new and the experimental.

SAM GRINSELL

Opening the evening will be this gifted soloist, who will be creating extraordinary music using his original music concept.

Gathering field-recordings within one mile of the Wilmington Arms over the course of one hour, Sam will be manipulating the sounds to forge a one-off soundscape purely for this evening, adding no new sounds whatsoever. He will accompany these recordings with his improvised slide guitar.

JAMES SHERWOOD'S PIANO BAR

CANDIED NONSENSE Thursday 1st December 2011

To round 2011 off, we're going to be giving you a chance to see incredible musicians some of whom are rarely seen in London, with lots of ukeleles, banjos and mandolins to boot!

TEAM A VS TEAM B

A genuinely uplifting 5 piece band, made up of jazz, classical, rock and folk musicians, who'll be travelling down from Manchester to join us this evening. Using a huge array of classical instruments they create wonderful acoustic music which smacks of Beirut, Neutral Milk Hotel and Bjork, among many other influences.

SUN TAILOR

Moving independent folk artist from Tel Aviv, who we're very grateful to have paying us a visit. Soft but intense, Sun Tailor's music envelopes you in soothing tones while maintaining lots of energy. A rare chance to see him before his debut album Like The Tide is released in 2012.

BERNADETTE BENTLEY

A brilliant modern English folk singer, playing guitar, ukelele and concertina. With haunting and mesmerising melodies and sharp lyrics, her music is thoroughly refreshing to hear.

WAR ELEPHANT

A heartfelt duo who play stripped down raw acoustic music. With backgrounds in metal, dance and folk these guitarists capture passionate melodies while maintaining an edge to their music. No strangers to gigging in London, hopefully you'll be following them around the city in their various exploits after seeing them here.

WORRY DOLLS

A wonderful female duo from Liverpool who are fresh on the London scene. Their compelling lyrics, passionate vocal harmonies and beautiful melodies have made us fall in love with them. Also using a variety of instruments, you'll definitely find something to be impressed about in this pair.
