Hi all
We welcome new ale The Wilmington Earl to our pumps this month, not only is it fitting but also delicious and incredibly Autumnal unlike the weather this weekend. Excellent events this month, Bam Thwok launch their new alt. pop album which will be going straight into our dukebox (and possibly for sale behind our bar) and the creators of Bright Club bring Science Showoff which is likely to be the most intelligent night we’ve ever had. We also welcome the launch of The Wilmington Players, an all new long form improv comedy group. Graduates of David Shore’s masterful tuition (10 years teaching at Second City, Chicago don’t you know) these guys are set to blow the doors off the traditional improv scene. Exciting.
Much Love

SCIENCE SHOWOFF Tuesday 4th October 2011
|
An open mic night for scientists, science communicators, science teachers, historians and philosophers of science, students, science popularisers and anyone else with something to show off about science.
It’s our first gig on Tuesday October 4th at the Wilmington Arms, 69, Rosebery Avenue, London, EC1R 4RL, and the brave performers taking to the stage will be:
Steve Cross – Compere and ringmaster
Andy Holding – “Dr Andy will show that, despite a lack of pretty pictures, mass spectrometry really can provide interesting answers where X-ray crystallography can’t. And don’t worry – he’ll also explain what all those complicated words means.”
Clare Elwell – “How can lighting up babies’ brains help us win more Olympic medals in 2012?”
Matt Wall – “I will be presenting an illustrated talk titled ‘NeuroBollocks’, covering some of the stupidest ways in which MRI scanners (and sometimes participants) have been abused in the name of science. May contain nuts, fruit, bloody great magnets and explicit pictures of people’s insides.”
Tony Plant – “A science geek’s view of the world revealing how to lose not just your car keys but the entire universe (almost), zoo-based astronomy, evolution vs. intelligent design and why science fame is a name game.”
Martin Austwick – “Dr Martin Austwick is a musician who writes about the world of science and discovery, and earlier this year released an album in a petri dish with sleeve notes in the form of a scientific article. This took the Musical Science Petri Dish world by storm, selling literally several copies.”
Charlotte Stoddart – “To mark the end of NASA’s 30-year space shuttle programme, Nature produced a short film showing all 135 shuttle missions in chronological order. Nature Video editor Charlotte Stoddart joins us for a special screening, and to tell us about sorting through hours of archive footage and working with British band 65daysofstatic to make the film.”
Henry French – “I’ll be introducing the audience to the science of the zebrafish, by showing off a fascinating BHF video made in support of our Mending Broken Hearts campaign.”
James Thomas – “James presents a celebration of Hymenoptera, the Schmidt Sting Index and the fearless devotion to science of its creator Dr Schmidt. Warning; it will contain some swearing, some graphic images of idiots being stung and some really bad hair.”
Sarah Castor-Perry – “I’ll be getting my hands dirty with dough and talking about the science behind bread – why kneading is so important and how to get the perfect crust. I will try not to make a mess…”
Jane Setter – “Ever wondered where to place your nucleus, or how to tell your FLEECE from your GOOSE? So have some of our students! Phonetician Jane with linguist Tim Wharton on guitar will have you all singing about phonetics, the scientific study of speech”
Doors are at 7pm, show starts 7.30. There will be an intermission and we’ll finish at 10, so that everyone has an audience to share tips and tricks and chat to the acts over a pint.
Free entry.
We will be collecting donations for Holborn Community Association, and would suggest a donation of about £5 from performers and audience members alike. You can find out about their work supporting local communities here: http://www.holborncommunity.co.uk/

CANDIED NONSENSE Thursday 13th October 2011

After a wonderfully successful launch at The Wilmington Arms last month, we are keen to bring you more interesting music from artists looking to showcase their projects. Now the artists each have two sets with an interval in between, so that you can see the different sides to their performances at various points in the evening... (Lineup not in running order) ARHAI A breathtaking exploration into the musical traditions of many cultures. Initially focused on the music of the Balkans, this project has now evolved to the point of playing improvised and arranged music fusing acoustic instruments with technology. OO LA LUME We loved seeing a trimmed down version of their set earlier this year. Back once more with their full lineup, we can revel in their vocal a cappella harmonies. Originally composing music purely around female voices, influenced by gypsy, swing, folk, a cappella and soul, they have now added instruments to their already rich sound. SILVERTORTOISE Transcendent solo pianist who will perform improvised contemporary classical piano pieces for us tonight. He has just released his debut album Mira, so come prepared to walk away with a copy. RABIMSHA A performer of the classic Brazilian instrument the Berimbau (or belly bow), most often seen as an accompaniment to Capoeira. Travelling around London and playing in the streets for the love of it, here is a rare chance to see him perform on the stage at Candied Nonsense. YOLANDE A multi talented musician, composer and songwriter. After studying classical composition in Lithuania, Yolande is now in London and writing pieces for an upcoming musical. We are very happy to be able to see her perform her contemporary compositions on the piano tonight. STEVE ANTONI An award-winning poet, lyricist, singer and guitarist. Having regularly performed at many venues including Ronnie Scott's, The Vortex, Twelve Bar Club and The South Bank Centre, we are honoured to be hearing him here. His heartfelt acoustic music will be a real treat for all who come along. Links to the performers can be found at http://www.chaostheorymusi c.co.uk/candied-nonsense/ Entry £5 on the door

THE BITTER SPRINGS
"You shouldn’t hold your breath waiting for a new record by The Bitter Springs. They come along every so often, usually without fanfare, but they are always a warm, lovely and memorable treat, like finding a tenner in the pocket of an old pair of jeans, getting four numbers on the lottery or having a Kit Kat that’s all chocolate and no wafer.
The Bitter Springs have been producing consistently great records at greatly inconsistent frequencies since 1996. In Simon Rivers they have a lyricist to match the insight, warmth and wit of a peak-period Cocker or Bragg, delivering tales of doomed romance, cracked family life, searing social comment and everything in between.
An almost undiscovered musical institution, the Bitter Springs,in a career spanning nearly 3 decades, in one incarnation or another, have made 8 albums, and 19 singles, on 11 separate labels. One of very few truly independent bands in existence today, they epitomise the punk ethic.
''Elegantly detailing the pleasurable & painful realities of the everyday grind. 'Wise worldly songs with more heart than a coroners lab. Abundant lyrical gifts. Age hasn't got a chance of withering them'' - Victoria Segal - Q magazine.
''One of the greatest British lyricists we have. Black humour, acerbic lyrics, and a sometimes unsettling dissonance'' - Matt Eastely - Royal mail courier magazine.
''The poet laureate of the damp and surly. Moments of black humour and terrifying emotional clarity continue to come thick and fast. Forever in the springtime of their creative powers'' - Jim Wirth - Mojo magazine.
''This is beautifully crafted, torpid, classic yet unassuming rock. 'Warm and emotional , often sardonic. rarely clichéd - Everett True- Plan B magazine.

SHIRLEY LEE
Solo show from the London-based singer and songwriter behind British indie icons Spearmint.
Spearmint have released eight albums and many singles, all on their own label, hitBack, having a minor success with 1997's 'Sweeping The Nation' and 'A Trip Into Space', both of which grazed the UK Top 75. "We're Going Out" received some airplay on BBC Radio 1 and was remixed by long-time Pet Shop Boys producer Stephen Hague.
"Perfect pop, girl / boy duets, Northern Soul energy, brilliant tunes, haunting instrumentals, some of the best lyrics youll ever hear, spoken pieces, ace guitars and saw playing. One day Spearmint will be hailed as Gods" - NME
"Spearmint are underground cult heroes who deserve to get that big break." - the Oxford Times

DEATH AND GLORY Thursday 20th October 2011
|
After a month off for good behavior, Death & Glory is back in October with yet another storming line up. This month we’re going to change your perception of Pop Music and show you that it doesn’t have to mean watching vacuous Topshop dropouts trying to emulate Mariah Carey but actually sounding like a anemic lamb with the auto-tune turned off. So, without further ado, we give you…..
Cruella Ribbons
Don’t let the fact that these... ladies are a duo make you think that they are anything other than fierce (in the campest sense)! Kelly and Serra are Cruella Ribbons and they make a buzz-saw pop sound that would ignite the meekest of parties. Think Shampoo with more brains, think a more English Sleigh Bells, think Courtney Love if she’d gone a bit Electro and then think ‘damn, I want to see this band’. Because you should and if you come to Death & Glory then you will! Win-win.
Girl In A Thunderbolt
Fronted by the mesmerizing Maria Uzor, GIAT (as they are destined to be known) are one of those bands that, on first listen, you just know will be amazing to watch live. As a trio of multi-instrumentalists, each song will keep you on your toes and grab your attention by the throat – if you’re attention does, indeed, have a throat. Fans of Nina Simone, the Velvet Underground, the Shangri-Las and Grace Jones, their particular brand of pop has a classic edge to it whilst at the same time remaining utterly modern. Curious? Yes, you are.
Rae Kelly
Taking a leaf out of the Ben Folds Five book of band set ups, Rae Kelly presents quirky, piano-lead pop songs of exquisite proportions. Now, before you even think of Kate Nash, remember that we at Death & Glory are all about substance over style and so you should really trust our judgment on this one. Influences like Regina Spektor, Elliott Smith, Elvis Costello and Carole King give an indication of the quality of songwriting Ms Kelly has in her musical locker. But don’t take our word for it, come and check the pudding for proof.
Canvey Island
Mr Chris Farrance is a conundrum of a man. For he is Canvey Island and Canvey Island is he. Chris is a one man music machine, making mind-boggling use of a loop station and using everything and anything within reach to make noise (watch out those at the front!). His music as simultaneously introspective and expansive and will leave you feeling comforted and uneasy all at once – a bit like a cuddle from an ex-con. Fun then!
As always, it’s £4 in and we will open the doors to our world at 8.00pm…..ish.

WHICH WAY IS UP! Friday 21st October 2011

Wake The President
http://www.myspace.com/wakethepresidentband
Wake the President isn t your typical indie pop band.
For starters, the group, which hails from Glasgow, is all about doing things for and by themselves, as more of a personal desire than a necessity. Add in the fact that the two core members, Erik and Bjˆrn Sandberg, are brothers and twin ones no less with Scottish accents and Swedish names (both of which represent their background), and what you have is a band that is just a bit unconventional, but in all the proper ways.
The Understudies
http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Understudies/
Celebrating the in shop releases of their cracking 7" singles 'Everyone Deserves At Least One Summer Of Love' on Odd Box Records.
"The Understudies have been ploughing a furrow of Edwyn Collins-flavoured melodic heartache for a little while now but this 7" on Odd Box might be their most fulfilled, and hence most fulfilling, exultation. Romantic and heartaching while positive in a way only young Morrissey and fey Scotsmen (see also Roddy Frame) can seemingly otherwise pull off" - Sweeping The Nation.
Frozy
http://frozy.bandcamp.com/
I love Frozy. They're ace. I first saw them playing a show for HDIF and I've been trying to book them ever since.
A three piece from London, Frozy play adorable lo-fi pop with a do-it-yourself/do-it-together attitude and always like to have help from friends. They are part of Tri-Linguial records, a collective of musicians from Europe and the USA sharing the lo-fi love. Except to hear vaguely unrehearsed lo-fi pop goodness in the tradition of Beat Happening.

After several years in musical hibernation, two former Creation label artists Pete Fij(alkowski) (Adorable/Polak) & Terry Bickers (House of Love/Levitation) have come together to write and record a selection of downbeat acoustic-led tracks, that still evoke the same intensity as their more electrified celebrated musical pasts, and suggests that the two musicians have now changed to the maxim that 'quiet is the new loud'.
Terry Bickers labelled by the NME as "a guitar god" is considered by many as the missing link between Johnny Marr & Bernard Butler in the cannon of great indie guitarists, and his disappearance from the musical scene after his important roles in The House of Love & Levitation, led to many believing that he was living as a recluse on a remote island with the ghosts of Howard Hughes, Bobby Fischer & JD Salinger. In fact he was living in the seaside streets of Brighton where he met Pete Fij who led Creation band Adorable in the 1990's to a string of indie hits, whilst his One little Indian band Polak received critical acclaim, leading the Independent on Sunday to proclaim that Fijalkowski was the "most under-rated lyricist since Jarvis Cocker last put pen to paper".
Like a late-night jam involivng Johnny Cash, The Velvet Underground and The Everley Brothers at 3 in the morning, trying not to wake the neighbours, the songs all following the same lost-love theme. Rumours that the two Creation artists had combined led to invites to play abroad, and the two have already aired their new material to audiences in Germany, France & Spain, and have already received numerous concert offers from the UK & Europe even before officially announcing their project. Their debut album will be released in 2012.

Tickets £5 advance (from www.fencerecords.com) and £7 on the door.
THE SHIVERS are a rock-pop group, based out of Queens, New York, comprising the talents of Keith Zarriello (lead vocals, guitar) and Jo Schornikow (vocals, keys/organ). Keith is your typical East Coast American tortured neurotic / love-lorn romantic, and part time estate-agent; Jo, your typical Australian travelling dreamer, virtuoso keyboard player, and occasional church-organist. Together, they’ve created one of the most beautifully compelling albums you’re likely to hear all year: MORE. The band recently signed to the Fife-based DIY record label, Fence Records - birthing ground to The Beta Band and KT Tunstall, and home to Mercury nominee King Creosote, James Yorkston, The Pictish Trail and more. Now the duo are coming over to the UK for a short blast of headline shows, and notable supports. If you like the grit of The Velvets, the shuffle of The Boss, the pristine sheen of The Strokes and the sass of Leonard Cohen you’ll find plenty to love in The Shivers.
