The Blanche Hudson Weekend + The Sunday Reeds (Australia) + Evans The Death
Doors 8pm. £4 door (£3 advance).
The Blanche Hudson Weekend A return to the Wilmington Arms for The Blanche Hudson Weekend (featuring former Manhattan Love Suicidues duo Caroline and Darren and other assorted weekenders) after the storming set at the Indietracks festival. Bringing to you all kinds of noise, fuzz, melody, dissonance, rawness, killer tunes and buzzsaw pop. Take a bit of 1960s girl group sounds, mix with Girls In The Garage type ramshackle production, add some gun slugging guitars and sugar sweet vocals with a keen ear for a great hook.
"The beauty lies in the simplicity (of the song). It tries not to do much and because of it, achieves more" - Drowned In Sound on recent single 'Let Me Go'.
The Sunday Reeds (Australia) The Sunday Reeds are a female-fronted noise pop/rock band named after Melbourne patron of the arts Sunday Reed. The love-child of some kind of rock 'n' roll orgy between The Jesus and Mary Chain, Joy Division, The Ramones and The Velvet Underground. Driving bass lines, plenty of guitar feedback, primitive pounding rock beats and alto, sex-laden female vocals. If Nico had joined The Ramones, strapped on a bass guitar, and a whole lot more noise was added, this is how it might have sounded. After spending much time songwriting and recording in a hell-hole apartment, founding members Romana Ashton and Drew Jones were joined in early 2009 by drummer Andy Dawson. And then there were three... The Sunday Reeds' debut album 'Drowning in History' is out now through Squirrel Records
Evans The Death A conjoining of the unlikely twin towns of Chelmsford and Clapham, Evans The Death is, in truth, the creation of five like minds temporarily parted by the A10. Drawing inspiration from the independently minded guitar bands of the 80’s and with a healthy disdain for the concept of stardom, Evans The Death songs put high stock on the intelligence of lyrics and the primacy of melody. Despite actively avoiding the well trodden route of hype gigs and fervent web activity to gain a name, their ‘Sleeping Song’ has already been a fixture of the more forward thinking blogs.

DEATH AND GLORY Thursday 16th September 2010

The second installment of the mighty Death & Glory and the quality acts just keep on coming. Without further ado, I give you....
DORA BRILLIANT (www.myspace.com/dorabrilliantuk) London trio Dora Brilliant are infectious. Seriously, don’t touch them – they’ll give you a disease and until an antidote is discovered we can’t be sure you’ll survive. I jest, of course, it is their tunes that are infectious and tracks like ‘Not My Face ...Please’ and ‘Human Being’ will have you twitching and jittering all night long. A Dora Brilliant live show is a rare beast so you don’t want to miss this chance to see one of the scene’s most intriguing and exciting bands. I wasn’t joking though, don’t touch them...
STAGES OF DAN (www.myspace.com/stagesofdan) Three men named Chris in a band named after a Dan playing songs that will make you dance like an agitated Llama. Three statements, only one of them is true. Fear not though, the bit about the songs is all true and their brand of rock’n’pop’n’folk’n’blues is really starting to turn some heads these days. Steve Lamacq described their feel-good track ‘Gary’ as “the catchiest song I have heard in a long time” and they just keep churning them out. There is no fat on these boys, just three lean men playing meaty songs hung on shiny pop hooks. Hmmm, abattoir rock anyone?
THE B OF THE BANG (www.myspace.com/thebofthebang) Southsea’s finest, The B Of The Bang, return for their third Ravenous show because we simply love them that much! Using everything from Mandolins to Moogs, Wit and his merry troupe make 21st century music for 21st century minds with a 19th century touch of class. The Fly called them “An unpredictable concoction of anti-folk, malice-laden vocals, psychedelic big-top clown breakdowns and smatterings of B-movie horror soundtracks” and we think that sums them up nicely. Certainly the kind of band that should be gracing your ipod at 3.00am on the nightbus to give you that sense of wonder at the world!
A.J. DUNNE (www.myspace.com/alexjdunne25) London based Texan Alex J. Dunne is more frequently seen as part of the fantabulous Winterhours but is an outstanding artist in his own right. Drawing on the likes of Jeff Buckley, the mellower moments of Beck, Bon Iver and the National, Dunne creates sparse yet filmic tunes that could be the soundtrack to many a break up. Perfect for to start a show that heralds the start of Autumn then! Come get your folk on...
It all kicks of at 7.30pm and will cost you £3 for the pleasure. And we'll throw in some Recharged Radio DJs to keep things fun!

THE MONKEYBALL EXPERIMENT Saturday 25th September 2010
|
HELMHOLTZ RESONATORS SOUNDSYSTEM + THE EMPTY GESTURES + CLIP STAMP FOLD + KING ROBOT
A top notch evening of leftfield alt-rock with foot-tapping electronic quirks liberally scattered amidst the guitars and caterwauling... not a shaky half-baked bunch of jangly indie wannabes insight, just great, impressive thought provoking good-time daftness/earnestness/nessness...
8pm. £5 / £3 members (www.tinyurl.com/spoonface)
The Empty Gestures - Recently described as “the drunk British Tom Waits” (indiefolkforever), Paul Hawkins is one of the most compelling, unusual and imaginative new songwriters in Britain today. His songs evoke the emotional primacy of Nick Cave, the imaginative storytelling of Jonathan Richman and the wit of Jarvis Cocker to produce dark fantastical narratives on subjects ranging from teenage boys who throw themselves into nuclear reactors in the hope of gaining superpowers to lonely outsiders who don medical coats and operate on unsuspecting bystanders. The Empty Gestures are the guitarless & drumless Euro-sinister electro-pop distillation of his regualar ant-folk kraut-rock backing band The Awkward Silences. Paul is a key figure in the contemporary UK antifolk scene.

A lovely bit of press for The Wilmo:
"Further down towards Exmouth Market, the Wilmington Arms is setting itself up as pretender to its crown. At the monthly night run by the sketch troupe Ladygarden, it's not unusual to see stars from Peep Show's Isy Suttie to Lenny Henry performing to a 40-strong crowd, spot Jennifer Saunders at the bar or bump into Ash Atalla, the producer of The Office, scouting for new talent."
