Original acoustic and world music showcase
URSA LLUNA Unique instrumental guitarist who creates brilliant music unlike anything we've heard before. Intense and layered fingerwork form the basis for this wholly original sound.
JACQUELYN HYNES Soothing, ambient, passionate musician who plays folk, Celtic and world music on silver and wooden flutes, piano and Uilleann pipes. With her guitarist they will bring you sinuous vocals, inspiring Celtic melodies and pulsating rhythms.
THE STATUES A singer songwriter duo who set the bar for all others. With original thoughtful composition, fantastic guitarwork and incredibly moving vocals, this is an act we are proud to host again and again.
CHRISTOPHER JOHNSON Heartfelt singer songwriter, whose voice ranges from soft and melodic to powerful and gravelly. Using his own guitar tuning, he creates atmospheric and moody music while still keeping a rhythm you need to tap your foot to.
ALICE AMELIA We welcome this dynamic singer songwriter from Brighton. Playing original music on piano with a soulful voice, Alice tries to take her influences from as many genres as possible. After supporting Ellie Goulding back in 2009 and being placed on the Amazing Radio 2011 prediction list for up & coming artists, Alice Amelia is set for an exciting future in the music industry.

FENCE RECORDS PRESENTS Monday 5th September 2011

FOUND
Kid Canaveral
Very special *regal* guest
+ Pictish Trail DJ
FOUND hardly need any introduction – they’re brand of experimental electronic schizoid-pop has been a staple at Fence events since the release of their second album, This Mess We Keep Reshaping. 2011 has been a big year for Tommy, Ziggy & Kev – their current album, factorycraft, came out in spring on Glasgow’s legendary Chemikal Underground label … and the summer has seen the boys hone their live skills with a slew of live dates and festivals slots under their belts. As well as a few dodgy festival curries, no doubt.
Before FOUND take to the stage, Kid Canaveral will have got everyone sweating their cardigans off. Our Edinburgh-based indie-poppers are experts at this sort of thing. We’re about to release the vinyl repressing of their fantastic debut albumSHOUTING At Wildlife - so make sure you pre-order this now, so that you can sing along come September.
I’ll be DJ’ing between/after acts as The Pictish Trail … and there’s another special guest still to be announced.
Price: £8.50 advance, available from www.fencerecords.com, and £10 on the door.

WHICH WAY IS UP! POCKETBOOKS ALBUM LAUNCH Friday 16th September 2011
|
Pocketbooks
Cancel The Astronauts
Anguish Sandwich
Doors 8pm
Tickets: £5 in advance / £6 Door http://www.wegottickets.com/event/131129
Pocketbooks http://www.pocketbooks.org.uk/
The second Pocketbooks album was recorded during the winter of 2010. The band gathered in the basement underneath a ukulele shop in east London’s Brick Lane, and played songs late into the night. It would have been a wintry record anyway, but the snow and the dark nights definitely played their part.
The album begins and finishes with a bleak, distant piano, but inbetween there’s a mix of bright harmonies, shimmering guitars and gorgeous strings.
The band were joined by the violin section of A Little Orchestra (set up by The Pipettes’ maestro Monster Bobby) who added some warmth and sadness in equal measure. The album was recorded by Simon Trought, who has also produced The Wave Pictures, Allo Darlin’, Fanfarlo and Darren Hayman. It will be released on CD and as downloads by Odd Box Records.
Cancel The Astronauts http://www.canceltheastronauts.co.uk/
Cancel the Astronauts live, variously, in Edinburgh and Markinch, and if you asked them which one they prefer, they'd probably say Markinch.
They're a big brash guitar pop band. And they're ace. This mini tour is also their first trip to London as a band.
In 2009 the band released our debut EP called ‘I Am the President of Your Fanclub (And Last Night I Followed You Home)’ and in 2010 a second EP called ‘Funny For A Girl’.
The band have pllayed a live BBC Radio session for Vic Galloway and have supported bands like Frightened Rabbit, Marina and the Diamonds, The Phantom Band and Kid Canaveral.
Their debut album is due in 2011.
Anguish Sandwich http://anguishsandwichcamp.bandcamp.com/
Anguish Sandwich are a riot in a teacup. They played a blinding set at this years indietracks festival. They're from the beat central town of Northampton. Don't let that put you off. They feature Chris East (aka Winston Echo) - so are of course brilliant. We're lucky to have them. And so are YOU.

SPECKS IN THE SKY Thursday 29th September 2011
|
Specks In The Sky – a night of stratospherically dreamy music (but without the night bus, or a stratospheric ticket price)
The Hall Of Mirrors (acoustic set)
Jessica Spencer and her colleagues make the most glorious, hazy, psychedelic pop we've heard in ages. Many of the studio recordings are laden with sumptuous 60s-ish orchestral touches that recall the Carpenters or even the Mamas & the Papas, while other tracks would do Kate Bush proud. Jess's voice is an utter treat throughout. The Hall of Mirrors have just finished touring with Eliza Doolittle, and – while we don't like to presume - we think the world might just be about to fall in love with this band.
“Dream-pop collective The Hall Of Mirrors are probably South London's best kept secret. Ethereal they may be, but lump them in with the current crop of shoegazers at your peril, for this band has an identity which is totally their own.” – Shindig Magazine
A selection of songs are streamable on the band's site, and there's always always a track for free download there too – currently, it's the divine 'Transparent Love'. http://thehallofmirrorsmusic.tumblr.com/
Owen Duff
We think Owen Duff has everything: songs, voice, production guile and the ability to wring magic out of piano, ukelele and cello. There's something of the Joan As Police Woman / Rufus Wainwright template (yes, that good), but Owen is decidedly his own man, rarely playing live and releasing his music through playful stunts – copies of his last EP were hidden in secret locations for fans to hunt for.
"very, very good" - Music OMH
"sounds like he has an edge, a reason, and a compass in his back pocket that can direct you to all the best places" - Nothing but Green Lights
Have a listen at www.owenduff.co.uk The 'Stopgap' E.P. is a great primer, and it's free – and not hidden in a secret location!
Hong Kong In The 60s
HK60s' debut album, 'My Fantoms', comprises delicious vintage sounds, perfectly judged melodies and drifting melancholia. They wouldn't be at all out of place in the esteemed company of Stereolab, Broadcast and Saint Etienne.
"...even at its most gently experimental, the album can’t help delivering exquisite melodies..." - Uncut
"This is thoroughly contemporary pop music filtered through a fantastic kaleidoscope of aural patterns" - The Liminal
“...heart-melting beauty...” - Sean O'Hagan, The High Llamas
Stream the album for free at http://propersongs.net/label/2011/02/hong-kong-in-the-60s/ You won't regret it.
Plus one other act still to be confirmed. Plus DJ Aug Stone.
Doors 7.30pm. Early start; early finish. Running order to be confirmed, but our first act will be on fairly swiftly after doors open, and by about 10.45pm you'll have seen four brilliant performances. We have a hunch that you don't want to be out until gone 11pm on a Thursday night.
Everyone gets cheap entry: £4. All profits go to the artists. We only book acts we love.
